Through a combination of an epidural stimulator – a device that provides a continuous electrical current to the lower part of the spinal cord– and a patient-controlled impulse generator, patients are able to re-create the ‘messages’ sent by the brain to initiate movement. Patients are able to execute movements and feel sensation, and the research has even shown the possibility of regeneration of spinal cord nerves through physiotherapy.
