Find It Faster with Image Match

Searching for the right image can be tough. After sorting through hundreds of images, you finally find a picture you like but unfortunately it’s low resolution or an odd dimension leaving you to go back to scrolling through the results pages. To take the hassle out of this process we’re introducing a new feature that allows you to match an image in a few simple clicks. How does it work? Now when you’re browsing images you will see a button at the bottom of the page that reads “Image Match.” When you click on the button, Bing will show you a list of different size images that you can then narrow down by size. If you want to see all images, click on view all sizes. If you come across an image online and want to find more examples, hit ‘image match’ near the search box on Bing.com/images and paste the specific image URL. Alternatively, if you have a popular or well-known picture on your computer that you want to match, you can also upload directly to Bing.com/Images and we’ll match the results. Try and it out and let us know what you think. - The Bing Image Team Searching for the right image can be tough. "Thank You for Your Cooperation"...

One of the great things about technology - search in particular - is the chance to constantly explore where the world is headed. Parsing through current trends and dreaming up innovations that will be coming to light in the coming years can seem a lot like science fiction. So it was a natural fit when Sony Pictures asked us to come up with a concept for search in the not-too-distant future to showcase in the upcoming Robocop film (opening this week.) Of course, all of us at Microsoft were huge fans of the original Robocop character, and we are excited to be a part of the project. Since the film is set in 2028 (and not, say, 3028), the team wanted a vision for Bing that was true to the story and innovations on the horizon, but still very much grounded in today’s reality. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to the Minority Report there is a long precedent of amazing visions of what technology will look like in the future. Microsoft is working to solve some very hard problems around voice recognition, image recognition, dimensional displays and other “natural user inputs” like gestures and eye gaze. Yet, some of the biggest solutions in search are less visible, like understanding people’s intent... SEO: Past Performance is No Guarantee of...

SEO (search engine optimization) has been around for a very long time. During that time, SEOs have found creative ways to move the needle, abused them, lost them to algo updates, found more and generally repeated the cycle 3 billion times. I’ve been on both sides of this, and made a decision about a year into running my first successful website: content would be the focus. Now, mind you, this was before “content was king” and before the engines really nailed that message. It just seemed like the right approach to me. Serve the searcher, not the engine. To be clear, I still use tools like the Bing Webmaster Tools and other webmaster tools to understand what’s up, I do some light keyword research , etc. All the usual best practices most sites perform every day. Remember, it’s all about balance today and moving forward. And while everyone today is all about “content”, many still seek shortcuts. So many businesses have flawed plans or approaches. And so many have business models that will be flawed as time moves forward. I was recently told a story from a friend about a meeting he had with a startup. Their CMO detailed their plans to strike it rich with a site full of “educational videos... Read More SEO (search engine optimization) has been around for a very long time. Deep Learning for Image Understanding in...

A few months ago we provided a behind the scenes look into how Bing is improving image search quality. In this post we wanted to take the opportunity to further that discussion highlighting some recent outreach we did with researchers to explore new approaches to improving image search quality. My colleague Eason Wang will give you a closer look at how we are taking advantage of Deep Learning and entity understanding to deliver more relevant, useful and beautiful image results in Bing. - Dr. Harry Shum, Corporate Vice President, Bing R&D Our colleague Meenaz Merchant gave an overview of Bing image search a few months ago. Today we will talk about the technology behind our approach. Rooted in the fundamental techniques of web search, traditional image search has relied heavily on text information such as surrounding text, title and URLs to deliver relevant results. However, in the age of social media and self-expression this approach has become less effective. A large percentage of images are shared with little or no text information (as shown in the example below). This presents new challenges propelling us to examine the properties of the image itself to provide more relevant and...
