Meet Monte, Principal Test Manager In Ads...

Working in the AdCenter test team is a great challenge. You get to work on leading edge software that runs at very large scale. The testing is still evolving as we have to find the right rhythm to support frequent releases and balance testing in the lab as well as testing some features in production. The other major work challenge we have is trying to figure out the right way to scale our testing to 3-5x the current volume of traffic in our production data centers. As part of the planned Yahoo migration this traffic ramp will happen in a very short time period. Opportunities to improve the engineering efficiency as well as the quality of our products is very large in this team and you come to work every day with a new set of challenges to work on and leave often thinking about other ones you didn’t get to. We have lots of areas for great leaders and technical minds to work on these large problems with managing the advertising software that is used by 200k+ customers and serving trillions of impressions a year and soon to be a on a world wide scale basis. Why I want to meet you at the National...

At the end of October, I’ll be attending the National Society of Hispanic MBAs conference & career expo in Chicago, IL. Myself, about 30-40 of my Microsoft staffing colleagues, and roughly 8,000 current MBA students and graduates will be gathering in the Windy City with two common goals: to eat our weight in deep-dish pizza and to network like crazy. Our fantastic campus recruiting team will be there interviewing current MBA students for full-time and internship opportunities. My industry recruiting colleagues and I will be there, with hiring managers, interviewing candidates with at least six months of post-MBA experience. You may wonder why Microsoft goes to events like this one. Well, the answer is simple. We want to find the best talent in the world. And we know the best things don’t come to those who wait, the best things come to those who go and get them! We attend a number of diversity recruiting events throughout the year because, quite frankly, we’re passionate about diversity and we like to go to where the talent is. So what kind of talent am I looking for at NSHMBA? Specifically, I’ll be looking for Product Managers, Finance Managers, &... Meet Eddie – Director Global Datacenter...

Data centers get a lot of publicity because of the rate of growth and the amount of power consumed across the globe. Companies that provide content and applications, as well as end users, just expect things to work. Everyone expects to find anything they need online, from every device they own, and it should always be available. This requires careful planning to stay ahead of demand, precise coordination of maintenance activities and flawless execution. The cost of running data centers is foremost on the minds of CTOs and COOs. We always look for more efficient ways to run the DCs and balance efficiency with providing 100% Uptime. Microsoft Data Center Operations is always looking for talented folks with experience and passion for maintaining data centers. Candidates must be smart, proven leaders, detailed oriented, passionate about cost and understand the importance placed on reliability at a data center. Resume Writing Tips - How Not To Write...

I asked recruiters, hiring managers, for their top "pet peeves" things they see on resumes that make them less interested in speaking with a candidate. Take these as great examples of HOW NOT to write your resume. 1. Writing the resume or cover letter in the third person. (my personal pet-peeve) 2. Too many grammar and spelling mistakes. (come on… seriously?) 3. Use of tiny, tiny fonts (10 pt or less) 4. Sending a resume attachment named 56897res.doc - use your name or descriptive label. 5. Writing the resume using table formats (columns). 8. Using a resume that is password protected (without sending the password). 9. Including references - but not professional ones - just friends and co-workers. 10. Having no contact information on the resume or including a phone number that is no longer valid. 11. When a candidate's email address is not appropriate for the work environment. Example: “BigMama@.com” 12. Resumes those are way too long. (The last 10 years is sufficient.) 13. Resume stuffing. For example, listing of every software application you've ever touched as a "skill." 14. Education written so it’s not clear if the degree was obtained. 15. Job hopping, which... Meet Keith - Testing Online Services

Testing at Bing provides many fun challenges in an agile environment that ships quickly and frequently. Testing distributed systems like Autopilot that control thousands of machines requires deep engineering knowledge and understanding of algorithms like PAXOS . Testing takes a whole new direction with verifying the output from the 3 new tech majors (Data Mining, Business Intelligence, Analytics/Statistics). A different kind of technical knowledge is required and there is less history, from a testing/verification perspective to rely on. Many Bing testers are breaking new ground in trying different approaches toward verification of machine learning generated results, e.g. Exploratory Test Automation . Testing also takes on a whole new role in the services world as testing in production becomes a form of service monitoring. You can not only do simple functional tests, but even destructive (business continuity) testing and load testing for capacity measurement in a live, running system. I get to apply my knowledge of Model-Based Testing using Spec Explorer to testing “Cosmos,” one of the world’s largest data storage and computational platforms it enables massively... Meet David Director of Product Management...

The title “Product Manager” means a lot of things at a lot of different companies. What does a Product Manager on the Bing team do? Put simply, product management in Bing is about global business leadership. We are responsible for identifying customer insights that inform R&D investments; guiding the division by developing near and long-term business plans; enabling the field to successfully launch and sell our services; and managing business performance. There are a variety of tools and processes that surround these activities, including research reports that gather and detail our key customer and market insights, market requirements that provide essential guidance to R&D on top priority investments, periodic business reviews that track and analyze our performance vs. plan and competitors, and strategy reviews that take the long view on our business. Together, these activities and processes form a clear set of insights and guidance that help the rest of the organization focus on the key levers that will drive user value and business performance. We work closely with a wide range of teams, especially engineering, marketing, sales, and finance. One key difference... Faster Doesn’t Always Equal Smarter – Kay...

Google rolled out a new search enhancement that shows results when you type, called Google Instant . While it’s true that this feature is innovative, one should question whether innovation equates to more relevant search results. In truth, there is no correlation between speed and quality or relevance of results. So, when you get the 10 blue links does the fact you got them faster mean the search and results were smarter? After all, Aesop warned us of the folly of relying purely on speed. Last year Bing’s search engine was tweaked to produce Real Live Search, which loaded full results pages as users typed. Stefan Weitz, Bing’s director, is featured in USA Today were he talks about how Bing is trying to do search smarter, and that faster doesn’t always equal smarter. He continues to explain that it’s a good thing to produce search results quickly, but that doesn’t always mean it is going to be the type of results that users are looking for thus not really saving them any time. Combining with Yahoo is helping them not only gain access to more information, but with the increase of information Bing can bring users more relevant results faster. “When... Meet Eric MSN Principle SDE Lead by Amanda...

My last blog post was about resume tips for developers. Since I am a technical recruiter, I spend a lot of my time talking with candidates, hiring managers and reviewing resumes. As a recruiter at Microsoft, you juggle the precarious task of candidate experience, hiring manager experience, diversity and inclusion and striving to find the right talent. We are serious about all areas. So what better way to enhance the candidate and hiring manager experience than sharing with you a story about one of my hiring managers? I spoke with Eric Askilsrud about his experience at Microsoft. My goal was to share his story and let the world know why his team is a destination spot for the best talent we can find. Eric is a Principle SDE Lead for the MSN Core Platform team. His team focuses on the rendering tier of the MSN Homepage and he’s tasked with scaling the ASP.NET MVC model. At Microsoft, our mission is to help people and businesses throughout the world realize their full potential. What does that mean to Eric and his team? Meet Sekhar AdCenter by Matt

I sat down recently with Sekhar to discuss his career, the development group he manages and what his team looks for in future employees. Some of the highlights from that conversation: Where in Bing do you work? I work in AdCenter online advertising platform and my group develops the Business Intelligence Core for our AdExpert product. This is the publishing platform for MSN and our other Microsoft-owned content sites. The main features we work on are taking the millions of rows of data that goes through our Display Advertising platform each hour and running the data through our internal map reduce grid to score and report out results to our publishing and platform partner groups. Did you have any perceptions of Microsoft before the interview process? I had been aware of Microsoft from an early age and was very attracted to the company given the sheer volume and breadth of the interesting technical problems they are working on. Joining directly into the online advertising space, versus into another part of the company has allowed me to work on online services for my entire career here. What it is like to work for AdCenter? Meet Abhishek A New SDE II in Bing Europe...

What was the reason you considered applying to the Europe Bing team, why Microsoft- Search ? I was looking for an R&D position in Europe that allowed me to use my Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) skill sets and Bing seemed like a good fit. I also felt that it was a good time to get into web search since I believe a period of intense innovation is forthcoming. This is being brought about by increased competition in the field and by the desire to tap into new sources of information such as social media and real time feeds like Twitter. I was also attracted by the start-up mentality at Bing, the small team sizes and the fact that the European offices are located in city centres rather than suburban business parks. Any tips to job seekers around the world interested in relocating to London and working at Bing? London is a great city to live in and the Bing office is bang in the middle of it. There are lots of cool restaurant, shops, parks and bars a stone throw away from the office which adds to the vibrancy of the work place. You cannot get bored around here. As for moving to London, Microsoft provides a very competitive relocation package which... Read More What was the reason you considered applying to the Europe Bing team, why Microsoft- Search ?
