Bing at The 140 Twitter Conference

Betsy mugs with ijustine (Justine Ezarik) first day of the 140 twitter conference. Perez Hilton, eat your heart out. The Twitterati Glitterati are out and in force (and they should never really have let me in)! My first big conference after Techcrunch50 was 140 Twitter Conference . Because it was in Los Angeles, it had a totally different flavor that perhaps only Stefan has experienced previously, during the Bing-a-thon. (Bing-a-thon star Olivia Munn was supposed to be on a celeb panel, but last minute shooting schedule issues prevented her. The Bing team sent her a small gift via her handlers; hopefully she got it. :) ). You don’t have to take my word on how much celebrities can rule a conference. The “twitter footprint” of the conference by Cheddr Media shows the impact of celebrities on a conference twitter stream. According to Cheddr, 2,911 people on Twitter tweeted 11,280 times with the hashtag #140tc, an average of nearly 4 tweets per person during the two day conference. Me, I just tried to perfect that “I’m-in-marketing-now” grin, which I almost get right here, but you can see my companions (Jade Bailey-Assam of Wynn Las... The Winners of Free T-shirt Friday and...

So the first Free T-shirt Friday (#FTF) was a moderate success. Why moderate, you ask? Apparently we didn’t really spell out the ‘how you enter’ very well. A couple of notes for this week: 1) Giving me a query phrase like “Halloween” doesn’t really count. Giving me a query phrase as part of a query ( like this ) that you’ve checked out and like the results (image, video, core web, etc) – this is good. 2) Make sure you hashtag it with #FTF – I saw a few that weren’t and I’m not good enough with the Twitter to grep thru all the tweets to find the best queries. All that said, since my rules were so opaque, we’ll still give out the Bing stuff to the following people: · My favorite: jillkocher @bing #FTF [raking orange fall leaves] - Bing Images http://bit.ly/3UVxE9 TGIF · dzandman @bing "Falling" in love, of course! http://bit.ly/sByvt #ftf · BingFan @bing #FTF Halloween Candy http://bit.ly/3X9MbT · Zeppyster @bing candle making basics ( http://bit.ly/FdQxQ ) #FTF · wiiteacher @bing FTF fall pagan festival –halloween · meerkat1o1 @bing #FTF... Deep Links Makes Life As A New Mom Easier

I am a new mom and the other day I was searching for diapers (I think I am buying new diapers every week), so I went to Bing and typed in diapers to see what came up. The first search result was for Diapers.com (which I love!) and the best part were these links that took me deeper into the content on diapers.com. So instead of having to click on the search result, look through the page and find the link to diapers it was just one simple click, straight from the search results page. To find out more about these very helpful links, I talked to the team that manages this feature and found out that these “Deep Links” usually get displayed in the Best Match result . I learned that customer research suggests the number one thing people are looking for in a search engine is the quickest way to find what they are looking for. Deep Links are designed to do exactly that and help simplify searches by taking you one step closer to your final destination -- in my case, diapers. How does it work? Basically, there is a bunch of crazy math and science that enables the team to determine the most popular actions taken on various websites. These Deep Links are then bubbled up... Kicking off Free T-Shirt Friday

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me for a t-shirt , I’d have at least enough for a new Zune HD (how’s that for a shameless product plug?) So rather than all of you being at the mercy of my random whims and free time where I can actually respond to said requests, we’re going to start something a little new here at Bing Ranch. Every Friday we’re gonna do two things: First, I’m introducing “Viewer Mail” whereby me or someone else from the team (I seem to be traveling a lot) will take a few questions from the community forums , the Twitter , and Facebook and answer them live. That’s right – no script, no adult supervision, all danger. You want your question answered? Make sure it is something that has an answer (no fair asking me to prove that the universe is expanding or Fermet’s Last Theorem), that it is conforms to the usual morals of our society, and doesn’t involve trade secrets (like what kind of Pomade I use to make my hair so spiky). Tag it with #stefquestion on any of the social media channels so we can find it. Sorry if I don’t get to all of them but for the ones that I do answer, it will... Taking it to the field

Fall is in the air and that means crisp mornings, school buses on the road, Holiday decorations at the mall and yes, more NFL games then you can imagine! Yesterday the announcement of the Bing partnership with the Seattle Seahawks went out and we could not be more excited. Bing is going to be on the practice field (check out the practice jerseys for this year) and if you go to a game at Seahawk stadium expect to see Bing in a few places there too. In honor of our partnership with the Seahawks, we wanted to remind you of our NFL instant answer which includes NFL stats, game scores, schedules and player information. You can also search on players, looks like Matt and the Hawks are off to a great start with a shutout last week…sweet! And if you want to take your player knowledge up another notch, check out the Bing Visual search gallery for NFL players …amazing! Good luck in all your fantasy football leagues and neighborhood game pools! We’ll be seeing you on the playing field (I mean you will be seeing us). Kristin - Bing *As mentioned above, Visual Search is still in beta. Visual Search is currently only available in the US and as we refine this feature... Where Stefan Goes, so Does Bing

If the day ends in the letter ‘Y’, I’m probably talking about Bing to someone outside of Microsoft. It really is the best part of my job and one that helps the product improve with every release as I get to see what people are doing and saying across the country (and world – thanks Germany!) with our product. Over the past few weeks I’ve been on both coasts talking to users, SEO wizards, ad buyers and agencies to show them what this Bing thing is all about and listen to what they think we need to do better. Some of the best feedback comes from people who work in the agencies who help companies market themselves online and those in-house at companies who have to make sure their sites are discoverable by engines. I was in Raleigh, NC with a group of folks who hammered home the need to drive even better brand awareness for Bing. They see amazing ‘conversions’ and Return on Ad Spend when they use Bing and AdCenter – but they need more volume. I hear you and we are continuing to work across all forms of media, both grassroots and broad, to get the word out about out our Decision Engine. I talked with a couple of radio programs while I... Picture the Impossible (with RIT, Democrat...

What if, for a few months this fall, your town/neighborhood changed - became the site of three warring factions, each striving to gain eminence, each with people they are trying to protect? And even the newspaper was not immune to their petty rivalries and challenges? What if you were invited to join one of the factions, to match wits with others in a secret society as slowly, slowly streets you thought you knew well and objects you pass every day – yielded up their secrets? And each time you figured something out, those less fortunate would gain, with the ultimate prize being entry to an invitation-only display of wealth, power and beauty? (and fun too!) Welcome to “Picture the Impossible,” an alternate reality game created by the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper , with technical development funded by Bing, that combines the thrill of intellectual pursuit with the footwork of geocaching games and the connoisseurs’ eye for art. Contestants will compete for prizes they can win for themselves from Kodak while at the same time helping charities including Foodlink, Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong... Share your Search with Bing and Ping

We at the Bing team are firm believers in the idea that the only thing better than searching with Bing is sharing what you’ve found with your friends. That’s why we’ve been working on a potential new feature for Bing that does just that in a couple of clicks, which we call Bing & Ping. Let’s break this down with an example: say you use Bing’s Instant Answers feature to check the score of the game, and you notice that your buddy’s favorite team has just been beaten pretty handily. Say you want to “delicately” remind him of their less-than-stellar moves with the ball. Bing & Ping lets you share this NFL instant answer through various places, like Facebook, Twitter, or even email in as few as two clicks. Reminding someone that their team has no defense has never been easier (in spite of the screenshot below, we of course aren’t talking about our beloved Seahawks). It’s not just limited to sports, either. Share a neighborhood plumber recommendation with a friend though email, tweet local movie times, or post a flight status with your Facebook pals while you’re trying to bum a ride from the airport. ...
