Bing is at Web 2.0 Summit

Bing is excited to be part of annual Web 2.0 Summit that kicked off today. This is the annual O'Reilly conference where visionaries and executives across key industries will present their unique perspective on the Web's future-in-flux and how the tools and principles of Web 2.0 are impacting their businesses. Bing's presence will be highlighted by Qi Lu’s plenary conversation with Tim O'Reilly, the founder of O’Reilly Media, on Wednesday 10/21. The footage is scheduled to be uploaded to blip.tv later in the week if you want to check it out. If you’re attending, we want to talk to you! Be sure to drop by the Microsoft Lounge featuring a live-feed from the general session, refreshments and representatives from Bing , Windows 7 , IE , Windows Live , BizSpark , as well as industry partners speakTECH and Telligent Systems . Think of it like this - what Bing is to search overload, the lounge is to people overload. Oh by the way, we’re hosting an invite-only party at Ruby Skye on 10/21 . It’s going to be a blast with food, drinks (21 and over stuff) and DJs and our featured act, Janelle Monáe , Queen of Cybersoul. If you’re in the SF area, we... Read More Bing is excited to be part of annual Web 2.0 Summit that kicked off today. Wishing Dr. Richard Bing a Happy 100th...

Today we are celebrating the 100 th birthday of a very special man and it all started with a fax to Mich Mathews, our SVP of Marketing. I’ll admit it was a little strange – it came from a man named Dr. Richard Bing who said he was 99 years old and would love to do something with us since we “used his name for our new search engine”. Mich routed it around to Carver and I and we both said, “huh, this is interesting.” Within days we were on a plane heading down to LA to go visit Dr. Bing and see exactly what he was all about. Carver kept insisting it might be some sort of prank pulled by a competitor to get us to an undisclosed location and put sugar in our rental car’s gas tank until I reminded him that I’m pretty sure that was a bit paranoid. When we arrived there was no sinister plan, just a man in a house near LA. To be fair, to say he is “just a man” is probably an understatement. You see before I went down, I did a little Binging on him. And I found out some interesting things… Dr. Richard Bing was born in Germany on Oct 12, 1909. In Germany, he went on to get a degree in music and composed a couple hundred... Read More Today we are celebrating the 100 th birthday of a very special man and it all started with a fax to Mich Mathews, our SVP of Marketing. Free T-Shirt Friday Round Two Winners

It’s time to announce the Free T-Shirt Friday Winners from last week’s challenge. I was a little busy yesterday watching a rocket get launched into space so I’m writing this post from an airplane somewhere over Oregon. Will there be a #FTF this week? No, nor will there be a Friday with Stefan but we’ll return next week when my schedule doesn’t appear to be so wacky. A reminder of last week’s challenge: Rain. Yes, I am really pulling out the creative stops on these themes, I know. Here are the winners: justag33k @bing #FTF My favorite thing to see during a rainstorm http://bit.ly/20EeNu #bing baby! It Really is Rocket Science

Today we celebrate a really great day for both high-resolution satellite imagery and kids in schools. That might seem like a strange combo so let me explain. Yesterday DigitalGlobe launched their new WorldView-2 satellite into space – you can read more about it here. Yours truly, along with Betsy Aoki, were on hand for the launch to watch a couple of pounds of rocket fuel go whoosh . We’re excited about the level of imagery that WorldView-2 will provide to Bing maps in the future. But today, we’re also very excited about something different. http://worldview2.digitalglobe.com/ When I heard about the rocket and satellite going up, I reverted back to my youth when I spent literally hundreds of hours building model rockets that I would then launch at the school playground on the weekends. Oh sure occasionally the rocket would get caught in an air current and float away into some neighbor’s backyard on descent but that wasn’t really the point. The joy for me was learning about propulsion, airflow over the monocoque shell, calculating the projected height to which it would ascend given the weight and engine specs. Yes, I was a nerd and I hid my... Read More Today we celebrate a really great day for both high-resolution satellite imagery and kids in schools. Use Your Voice to Text, Call and Search...

Today Sprint Wireless announced their new Samsung Intrepid phone with a new voice user interface from Tellme. This new interface will allow you to search the Web with Bing by speaking your search query, compose a text message or even dial a contact by simply talking instead of typing. Check out this video to see this new voice interface in action: (Please visit the site to view this video) Have you ever really stopped to think about how many steps it takes to get anything done on your phone? For example, searching the web for a restaurant can take over 20 strokes of the keypad and sending a text message can take even more depending on how long your message is. How about the numbers of steps it takes to place a simple call to your mom, this can take up to 6 steps. The number of steps it takes to complete your tasks may not be a real problem for when you are sitting at your desk or at home on the couch. But what about those times when you are carrying that bag of groceries in one arm and you need to text your spouse that you need them to pick up the kids from soccer practice? Or walking up and down a busy Manhattan sidewalk searching for the address of the café where... Read More Today Sprint Wireless announced their new Samsung Intrepid phone with a new voice user interface from Tellme.
