More People Turning Online to Research

Today PewResearchCenter released a report that goes into depth on the rise in how we are researching products online . One of largest increases Pew found was how people are using the web to make their shopping and services decisions by comparing products and options online. We agree - in fact, we know how important having product information and reviews is to you before you make that purchasing decision. With that in mind, we’ve worked hard to deliver a compelling and useful summarization of reviews across the web in areas that people care about within our Bing shopping expereince. Not only do we aggregate these detailed ratings & reviews sourced from ResellerRatings.com in one place for you we also provide you with product images that we source straight from the merchant, shipping information, and helpful links to other product information like manuals & brochures. Are you one of the 58% of adults that have conducted a product search online? Or are you one of the 21% of adults who on a typical day research online? If you are, you are part of this rise in people who are turning to the internet to find out more information before they make a purchasing decision... Climbing to New Heights with Eric Larsen

It is hard to believe that Explorer Eric Larsen has begun the last leg of his Save the Poles expedition , which has taken him to Mt. Everest. Earlier this year Eric completed the first two legs of his journey to both the North and South Pole and now has started his accent up Mt. Everest. We joined Eric shortly after his South Pole Expedition and have been fascinated with his findings and thrilled to be a part of his quest to both raise awareness to the issues surrounding climate change and to educate us on how we are impacting the planet. You can find information on Eric and his expedition at www.ericlarsenexplore.com , read the latest news and discussions about his expeditions on Newsvine , engage with his community on Facebook , track his progress through Twitter or follow his climb through his journal entries and videos on his website . There is a lot that can be learned from Eric and other explorers like him, and we hope that you are able to follow him during this last leg and maybe be encouraged to learn, explore and follow your passion. Teach Here, Teach Now: Bing Presents a...

In conjunction with the launch of the new U.S. teacher resource, http://teach.gov , the Bing team is excited to present our own Teach Here map app. Teach Here presents a veteran or potential teacher with a simple way to search for teacher prep programs, state teaching certification offices, school district headquarters, and local teaching jobs. A great education depends heavily on having great teachers, and this application represents a first for Bing maps in terms of collaboration with the Dept. of Education and an opportunity to show what mapping technologies can do to help teacher recruitment and support the teaching profession. We had offered them access to Bing Maps data for use in their site, which you will see on teach.gov, but we wanted to do more than that. As our emphasis on education and education reform emerged in May, the Bing REDU team started talking with the folks at the Dept. of Education about what we could build that would be helpful. We learned from them about the current and projected shortfalls for public school teachers, especially in math, science, special education and English language learners and the upcoming TEACH initiative and teach.gov Web site.... Ask Arne about Education

Arne Duncan, the U.S. secretary of education, fields your questions in an Oct. 1 webcast. Are crumbling schools putting our nation’s future at risk? Are our teachers prepared for the myriad challenges they meet in the classroom? Is frequent testing giving us a good idea of student success and failure, or distorting comprehensive education for the next generation? MSN and Bing’s REDU initiative are presenting an opportunity for you to ask these questions or others to the top guy at the Department of Education – Education Secretary Arne Duncan as part of the White House “Open for Questions” program. Between Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, post your questions or vote to support others’ questions at http://ask-arne.msn.com . On Oct. 1, between 2:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Eastern time, Shira Lazar—the host of the MSN social reality competition The Tastemaker —will put your questions directly to Secretary Duncan. Earn rewards for searching and exploring...

When we launched Bing over a year ago, we set out to shake up the search market and try new and innovative approaches to improve the search experience. We’ve been pleased with the positive feedback we’ve heard from customers, and humbled to have seen some great momentum in our early months. We’ll continue to explore new approaches to search and interesting ways to engage users and increase awareness of Bing features. Today marks another step forward in that journey, with the launch of Bing Rewards. Bing Rewards is a new program that gives you opportunities to earn credits—redeemable for great rewards—for searching and exploring online. Join and discover all the ways Bing helps you make faster more informed decisions. We’re launching a preview of Bing Rewards in the US and look forward to collecting user feedback to help shape and improve the program. Similar to other loyalty programs (grocery stores, frequent traveler programs, credit cards and more) Bing Rewards is a great way to get rewarded for doing what you love to do online—searching, exploring, and discovering. And while you can redeem credits for cool stuff, you can also use... Twitter User Recommendations on Bing Social

As the internet continues to evolve, we find there are more new “signals” coming in to search that enable us to provide customers with more relevant, real time and connected results. Our work with Twitter and Facebook over the last year or so has helped us create what is in effect a “social layer” for search that brings social information into the search experience in real time. This is an important investment for us at Bing. Today we’d like to share some more progress in this area, specifically a new feature we call People Recommendation. With Twitter growing to more than 145 million accounts, finding interesting people to follow can be difficult. People Recommendation on Bing Social helps you discover interesting and relevant Twitter users based on your searches. Whether someone is “Influential” and helping shape the conversation or “Popular” like a celebrity, the new Twitter User Recommendation feature helps to identify Twitterers related to your query. For example, if you search for “ Windows Phone ” (did we mention how excited we are for the new Windows Phone 7 ?) you will see Bing Social recommend some influential... Power to the Students

Bing is sponsoring a “kids owned and operated” event on September 18 th (Saturday) called TEDxRedmond chaired by the youngest TED speaker, 12-year old Adora Svitak . A free, inspirational event for kids by kids , this one-of-a-kind conference will bring some of the most extraordinary youth from Washington State and the nation to share insights, knowledge, and "ideas worth spreading" with their peers. Adora and the TEDxRedmond event team have worked extremely hard to coordinate and bring in some of the nation’s top young people with big ideas and talents – many who are Washington natives. This event is for those 18 and under - parents of attending children are welcome to attend and watch the simulcast in a separate theater within the conference center. If you’re attending, be sure to stop by the Bing kiosk to find out the what the world’s first “decision engine” is up to – you might be surprised by what we’ve been cooking up lately. Our Commitment to Education

The idea of connecting people to information is something that the team here at Bing strongly believes in and something that we know teachers across the world do every day. Bing provides data and a service that empowers teachers with tools and students with a vast amount of knowledge, giving them the ability to learn and explore both in and outside their classrooms. We’ve demonstrated our support, especially in the classroom through programs like the Earth Day Photo Contest , Teacher Appreciation , and with the recently launched initiative, REDU . Today, we launch another program, the “Our School Needs” competition, with visits from Singer Josh Groban to a school in NYC and TV Personality Maria Menounos to a school in Los Angeles. Our School Needs is a competition open to all teachers and students in public and private K-12 schools in the United States. Starting today people will have the tools and information needed to prepare their entry telling us what their school needs with an essay, pictures and an optional video. Is it new desks, sports equipment, a remodeled theatre? Then on September 20 th we start welcoming submissions and you can review and rate your... Bing Previews a More Beautiful Search Experience...

We are very excited about the IE9 beta launch today in San Francisco. The team has put a lot of work into building a browser that helps to unlock the beauty of the web. Bing was one of several publishers to preview some new possibilities from the combination of fully hardware accelerated HTML5 in IE9. We are very excited about the new capabilities in IE9 and how they can be used to provide a very rich search experience. Jeff Henshaw, Director of Bing User Experience Today we begin the next chapter of this journey, with IE9 and HTML5. We’ve built some concepts that we were honored to share at the IE9 event today, and we’ll be making that available in preview format for users of the IE9 beta soon. HTML5 is the fifth major revision of the Web’s core programming standard, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). IE9’s implementation of HTML5 is a big step forward because it allows developers to do lots of things more quickly, and utilizes the full power of the PC as well as the web to bring customers richer, more immersive and more beautiful online experiences. Experiences that start to feel as immersive as the applications that run directly on your PC. Bing... Read More We are very excited about the IE9 beta launch today in San Francisco. REDU: Every Kid Deserves a Great Education

As you might know, there is an increasingly critical national conversation developing around the state of education in the United States. This conversation is happening at all levels of American life, from the White House to the local school district. As kids are heading back to school, you likely have even had to make some decisions about the path they take – not all of them easy and many of them might have seemed like compromises. There is consensus on one thing – that we must do more as a nation to support our schools, our teachers and our students. A few months ago, I asked the team what Bing could do to help the conversation along. As a first step, today we are launching an initiative and website called REDU . Located at http://www.bing.com/redu , this is a site we built to help people come and get informed, involved, and connected to challenges, opportunities, and activities focused on improving education in our country. It’s meant to be a place people can go online to get a pretty comprehensive picture of what is going on in the education debate, allow them to join the conversation and to find ways to take action and make a difference.
