Restoring sanity, one classroom at a time

I was in New York last week and decided I’d stop by the Donors Choose offices. I love Donors Choose because when people use their service, they become hooked on supporting education. They see what a little money can do to help our teachers, our schools, and our kids. It pays dividends. So when Charles came into the meeting and told me that they had one of only two tents on the National Mall at this weekend's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear , I had an idea… Me: "Hey, can you get me backstage to hang out with Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart?" Charles: "Probably not." So I had another idea. This one focused on Bing's REDU efforts to spark the conversation and involvement around rethinking and rebuilding education in this country. So after a couple of mugs of mint tea (they don't have coffee in their offices, not that I'm still bitter) we figured out that we should join forces with Donors Choose this Saturday and give the tens of thousands of people present on the Mall a way to learn about how they can get involved with REDU and help a school using DonorsChoose.org. The result? We're excited to announce REDU will be on... Read More I was in New York last week and decided I’d stop by the Donors Choose offices. Getting places faster with Bing Local

Lately there’s been a lot of discussion about how to find what you’re looking for locally. It’s a very large percentage of queries, but providing great results for these searches is a bit different from more general queries. The initial results need to be more specific and take location into account, while still offering quick ways to narrow your search and make your decision about where to go. For example, a search for Chinese food shouldn’t immediately return recipes and Wikipedia links; a more common user intent with this class of queries indicates we should take you to Chinese restaurants locally. Understanding intent is the first step and a critical area of focus for Bing. The more we understand intent, the more we can deliver a fast and powerful way to complete your task or make a decision such as where to go for delicious Chinese food. The real magic comes with the ability to filter and further refine local search results by relevant factors such as price, neighborhood and atmosphere, for example. In Bing we bring you these filtering tools on the left hand rail of the local results page. Further, these refinements are different depending on the type... More exciting news from Bing and Yahoo...

Today we marked a very important milestone in our search alliance with Yahoo!. As David Pann outlined in his post , as of today, Microsoft’s adCenter advertising platform is now powering all the paid search listings for searchers on both Bing and Yahoo! in the US and Canada. This is exciting news for advertisers looking to reach a broader audience that comprises almost a third of online users in the US and Canada. This work represents strong collaboration between the engineering and sales organizations of both companies, who have worked tirelessly to complete both the algorithmic and paid search transitions in 2010 with the quality our customers deserve. As we launch the new unified search marketplace in the US and Canada, we will continue with our work to deliver a quality transition for customers in markets around the world, while continuing to bring new innovations to both Bing and adCenter in the weeks and months to come. Enter the top iphone app gallery in Visual Search where we bring together many of the most popular iPhone apps, organized by category with details and links to more information about the app, to help you find that perfect app more quickly. If you haven’t checked it out, you should. The positive feedback generated by the gallery led the team to the next question: how can we help people download the app immediately right from the gallery? Enter Microsoft Tag ! No longer do you have to find the app on Bing, go to the App Store on your mobile, search for it again and finally hit “Install.” With Bing’s new Microsoft Tag implementation on the Visual Search gallery, you can download apps with just a snap of a tag. After downloading the Microsoft Tag Reader for your iPhone, snap the tag associated with the app, which will launch a detail page of the application in the iPhone App Store allowing you to download the app with one tap. Bing: Your ticket to football

Throughout the football season, we’ve been talking about how to use Bing for your game-day decisions. Dogs vs. brats, cab vs. drive, Peyton Manning vs Tom Brady or hoodie vs. body paint – all of which are key decisions to be made during the season. And on the field, there are decisive moments in the game that make the difference between celebrating your team’s win or mourning their loss. As the days tick down to the biggest game of the season, Bing wants to take a minute to celebrate and connect you to all parts of the football experience: To salute the elite group of quarterbacks that have led their teams to a Super Bowl ring, ESPN is launching a new feature series called “ I am a World Champion,” presented by Bing , offering a first-person narrative from the signal callers who helped define the biggest game in American sports. Also, as the official Decision Engine of ESPN The Magazine’s 2011 NEXT event, Bing will be presenting an open-to-the-public panel of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks including Joe Montana, Doug Williams and Kurt Warner on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. CST. New Signals in Search: The Bing Social...

The technology search engines employ to retrieve that needle in the information haystack is staggering and humbling; it's one of the things that get us fired up to come to work at Bing every day. Today we announced an exciting expansion to our long-term partnership with Facebook. Specifically, we are rolling out some new features that allow you to take your friends with you into your Bing experience, both at www.bing.com as well as within the search experience at www.facebook.com . We will enable a great search experience for people queries, by bringing in information from your Facebook friends and people who share networks with you, and we will show you what your friends have liked (using Facebook's public like platform) as you navigate through search results in Bing. Why is this interesting? At the customer experience level, search is getting more social and more personalized. We think that's a great thing to help you make better, more informed decisions. But we think there is something more profound going on under the covers, an inflection point in the search industry that will enable more interesting social scenarios in the future. Wishing Dr. Richard Bing a Happy 101st...

Can you believe it has already been one year since we were all introduced to Dr. Richard Bing ? Recently I re-watched Para Fuera – A Portrait of the Life of Dr. Richard Bing which was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film festival and I was again moved by the accomplishments and selflessness that Dr. Bing has. I am grateful that he came here to spread his wings and that we have all benefited and have had the chance to learn from his desire to create. From myself and the entire Bing team we want to wish Dr. Bing a very happy 101st birthday and hope that he is surrounded by his family and friends enjoying the LA Philharmonic play Mozart, Beethoven and of course Bing!
