The top Bing searches for 2010

As 2010 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the year’s most popular search trends. While topical items like Swine Flu and Stock Market topped the list in 2009, this year rankings reflects the popularity of celebrity news. This year’s most searched for topic was Kim Kardashian which received 20% more searches than the second most popular term: Sandra Bullock . 2009’s top searched term, Michael Jackson dropped to the number 11 position for most popular people. The only item repeating their appearance in the top ten was Kate Gosselin (last year’s #8) – although this year she appeared alone – minus Jon. Also, the tough economy is apparent with discount retailer Walmart and the topic “free” appearing in the top 10. Guest Post: Joe “The Commish” Cahn shares...

Of Tryptophan and Football By Joe “The Commish” Cahn You know the drill: eat Thanksgiving Dinner, get in front of TV to watch the games and then it’s off to dreamland. You might doze off in front of the Patriots/Lions game, wake up in the middle of the Saints/Cowboys tilt, nod off again and then finish it by catching what you can of the Bengals/Jets triple-header finale. Everyone blames the tryptophan in the turkey. You hear people announce this self-fulfilling prophecy -- that the bird is what causes us to get in to that deep, REM, snore-worthy state of sleepy bliss. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but it might not just be the turkey. Sure, turkey has high levels of tryptophan and it does contribute to the “sleepies.” But, it also has to do with the carbohydrates that you consume during the meal. Yep, those rolls, potatoes, stuffing -- anything that has carbs in it -- are the culprits that trigger that tired feeling. But, let’s be honest -- maybe we should just keep this between us. Because one of the great traditions of Thanksgiving is (usually) that uncle who rolls in for dinner and says something like, “alright... Top online shopping trends for the holiday...

As Black Friday approaches, should you plan ahead or procrastinate this holiday season? While Black Friday warriors may get their list done sooner, procrastinators who wait until the last minute to make their purchases hope to take advantage of deeper discounts from retailers as the holiday nears. . If you’re a last minute December shopper, you’ve got lots of company. Called the December Dash, Researchers at Microsoft (1) found that in 2009 there were 10-13% week-over-week increases in clicks on retail paid search ads in the first two weeks of December, on top of the already-elevated click activity of Black Friday week. So, what’s a savvy shopper to do – buy the season’s “it” gift on Black Friday or wait until the holiday approaches? According to a study from comScore (2), 28 percent of consumers this year will wait to shop until just before the holidays in hopes of getting better deals. But they could run the risk of waiting too long and getting the dreaded “Out of Stock” notice. If you’re worried about one of your gift ideas flying off the shelves this Black Friday, check out the below list to see if one of your gifts... Dr Bing: A life remembered

It is with great sadness that I write this post. Last week, at the age of 101, Dr. Richard Bing passed away. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones as well as the countless others that his life touched. His legacy is an inspiration to all of us here at Bing; in particular those of us who were lucky enough to meet him in person. With the permission of his family, we have included his full obituary below. Sean Carver – Bing Richard J. Bing, MD Richard J. Bing, who worked with the aviator Charles Lindbergh and the Nobel Laureate Alexis Carrel at the Rockefeller Institute on an early version of the artificial heart and the perfusion of human organs, and whose musical compositions led to a friendship with the composer Carl Orff, died Monday, November 10, 2010. He had celebrated his 101st birthday only three weeks earlier with a performance at his home in La Canada, California of a Haydn Quartet by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, who had played there on the occasion for many years. He had earlier composed music for the quartet. Dr. Bing left his research laboratory at the age of 98, having published the last ones of his more than 500 journal articles...
