As 2010 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the year. If you’re like us, it’s a time to say goodbye to old habits and start pulling together a list of New Year’s resolutions. With that in mind, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the most popular New Year’s resolutions for Bing- comparing resolution searches made in January 2010 to November and December 2009. Last year the most popular resolution was to lose weight, with double the weight-loss related searches landing in January, compared with November and December. The most popular weight loss terms were: Calories Calorie counters Body Mass Index (BMI) Fitness came in second last year, with about half as many users doing exercise-related searches as those looking specifically for diet and weight loss. Many of the searches were for exercise and home gym equipment including treadmills, tread-climbers and Bowflex. . The below data shows the percent increase for specific weight-related terms searched from November to December 2009. Eight cities, eight teachers, one goal...

Each of us had a teacher who challenged us to be who we are today. They pushed us a little harder. They inspired us to do more. They believed in our ability to succeed. To celebrate great teachers and to encourage people to get involved in a teaching across the world, Bing’s REDU initiative has partnered with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) Foundation to help sponsor eight teachers for a full school year through the Teach for America and Teach for All International programs at www.letsredu.com/caafoundation . Teach for America and Teach for All International enlist our most promising future leaders to teach in urban and rural public schools. These teachers are on the front lines of education reform and are critical to the development of the nation’s youth. REDU and the CAA Foundation are behind their efforts to positively impact the lives of young people in America and around the world. Reflecting the global need for great teachers, we are supporting educators in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Nashville, St. Louis, New Orleans, London and China. Guest Post and Video: Bing National Tailgating...

This week the Bing National Tailgating Championship brought the sun to Seattle. Judges including local rap pioneer Sir Mix-A-Lot, sampled burgers, puzzled the tailgaters and reveled in the rare northwestern sun. Team “Hawk One” took captured the regional title and will go on to compete in the National Tailgating Championship Finals in Dallas/Fort Worth next month. Thank you to everyone who made it out to competition and discovered how Bing can simplify your game day decisions. Stay tuned for more updates on the National Championship in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Joe “The Commish” Cahn joins us again this week with a play-by-play of the action in Seattle. Oh Say Can You Seattle? By Joe “The Commish” Cahn Yes, we could. Think about the Pacific Northwest in the winter for a moment. My best guess is that you would probably say the following, “gray, rainy and cold.” OK, the chilly part was accurate on the Seattle stop of the Bing National Tailgating Championship tour. But, this last stop before we head to Arlington, Texas had bright, brilliant sunshine in the shadow of Qwest Field... Bing Feature Update: Get to know any city...

Last week we told you about the natural language capabilities that make it faster to find and book flights in Bing. Today we are releasing features that make it easier to research and plan trips to over 3000 cities across the world. The new feature assembles all of the relevant information about a destination on one page so you can research a city before you go. The top things you need to plan your trip - including flight information, a list of hotels in the area, popular attractions, local events, local news, civic photos, a map and a weather overview - are now in one place. Click into each of the sections to see a full list or gallery relevant to the city. If you’re searching for a local city, Bing can recognize that you’re close and serve up results accordingly. Let’s say you’re thinking of travelling to Miami this winter. Type Miami, FL into the search box, and click “Explore City” to check out the destination city. 3000+ cities around the world. Page content is contextual based on user location. Rich content include events, news, images, videos, weather, flights, and hotels. Wherever you’re... Help Build a Better Speller: MSR and Bing...

Bing and Microsoft Research are enlisting the help of researchers and students from around the world to take part in the Speller Challenge . We are all familiar with the experience of search engines providing results based on a common misspelling or typo: This technique, called Spelling alteration, is the predominant way for search engines to translate typing errors, alternative spellings, and synonyms with the goal of providing the best results to you on the first try. However, this approach is not perfect. My spelling error could be your perfect query. The Speller Challenge is looking for a better way to determine which results a search engine should provide and how alternatives should be represented. The top five competitors will receive the following: First place US$10,000 Second place US$8,000 Third place US$6,000 Fourth place US$4,000 Fifth place US$2,000 To learn more about the challenge including details on participation please click here. - The Bing Team Bing and Microsoft Research are enlisting the help of researchers and students from around the world to take part in the Speller Challenge . Bing Feature Update: New UX streamlines...

Whether it’s introducing completely new ways to browse pictures with things like “Infinite Scroll” or helping you filter images by color and composition, a more intuitive and visual image search experience has always been a big focus for us. To that end, this week we’re excited to introduce improvements in how Bing presents and organizes your image results. The first thing you will notice is our new Instant Answer that organizes a rich collage of images directly into the main results page. Once you click through to the “images” page you will notice that we’ve populated the tabs with the most common search queries associated with a given image. Instead of making you qualify that you’re looking for (Casablanca, Morocco or Casablanca, the movie), we have organized the tabs so that one simple click gets you to what you’re looking for. Stay tuned for more from us. Bing Feature Update: Discover more things...

As Satya talked about today , building on our exclusive collaboration with Facebook we will soon be rolling out another update designed to make search more social and relevant. Over the last several weeks, we introduced the new “Liked” results feature that uses the basis of your query to surmise your intent and surface relevant stories or websites that your friends on Facebook have liked with a nice answer, called out somewhere on the page. For instance, if I search for “Bistro Cuisine, Seattle” and my friend has liked “Stumbling Goat Restaurant in Seattle” it will show as a liked result based on the fact that my friend has pressed the "Like" button on this business listing on Citysearch. Based on the positive customer feedback, we are taking this feature a step further expanding the results to include even more sites. Starting today, if your search results include a specific link that has also been “liked” by someone in your Facebook network the link will be highlighted as “Liked” within Bing. This gets especially interesting for a query like "Xbox" where my friend “Liked” the "Kinect" site and while our... Bing's Fall Update: More Helpful, Local...

Today we spent some time in San Francisco to talk with people about the latest release of Bing which is rolling out in the coming weeks. We love getting the opportunity to share what we’re up to and talk about what’s next for search in general and for Bing in particular. There are a number of links below that detail the features going live in the coming days. I encourage you to read the posts, try the product and please let us know what you think over at @bing on Twitter and at facebook.com/bing. Now, I want to give you a high level look at how we’re thinking about this latest release. Our focus on reimagining what search can be to better respond to what you’re doing has not changed. To do that, we are building new technologies that help Bing figure out what people like you are trying to do , and match that with the right experiences to help get things done . The core of our work addresses the fact that the web is getting more complex and faceted- not less. At the same time, your time is being compressed more than ever. But this ever evolving web provides footholds on which Bing can build that can help cut through the noise. This evolution challenges...
