Earlier today, 6 teams faced off to settle the question of which city has the best tailgaters in the nation. In the shadow of Sunday’s big game, the Bing National Tailgating Championship showcased the best tailgating teams from across the country as they competed across four categories including team spirit, sports trivia, parking lot agility and c ooking . It is our honor to congratulate the Bulls Eye Tailgaters from Houston ! They received $15,000, the coveted Golden Grill trophy , and the right to call themselves Bing National Tailgating Champions! Over the past season, it’s been an amazing experience for us to see the passion, creativity and class displayed by the thousands of fans that show off their team pride and football traditions every Sunday. A special thank you to Joe “The Commish” Cahn who brought his years of tailgating experience, plus a lot of humor and wit to the competition as the master of ceremonies and to Reggie Bush who served as final guest judge. Again thanks to everyone who took part and we hope that the features that Bing offers helps you make the most of your decisions (game day or otherwise) down the road. ... Read More Earlier today, 6 teams faced off to settle the question of which city has the best tailgaters in the nation. World IPv6 Day: Bing taking decisions to...

Earlier today, IANA , the international body responsible for distributing Internet addresses, completed its final allocation of IPv4 addresses . IPv4 has been the primary communication protocol for the Internet for more than 20 years, so this final allocation marks the end of an era, to the extent the brief history of the Internet can be categorized this way. Considering the rapid proliferation of personal computers, smartphones, networked appliances, and other connected devices around the world, it’s easy to conceive how we’ve already exhausted four billion IPv4 addresses. Microsoft and other major technology companies have been working behind the scenes for years to outline a clear path to the next generation Internet Protocol, IPv6. Although a complete migration will take years, we are hopeful that the vast majority of people will never notice the transition. Microsoft has worked as a member of Internet Society (ISOC) – and more generally the Internet community – to invest in and ensure that there is a seamless transition from IPv4 to IPv6. It is especially important for Microsoft’s online services like Bing to... Read More Earlier today, IANA , the international body responsible for distributing Internet addresses, completed its final allocation of IPv4 addresses . Setting the record straight

I was unable to attend the Farsight conference yesterday but watched events unfold online and wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and make sure everyone is clear about a few things. It was interesting to watch the level of protest and feigned outrage from Google. One wonders what brought them to a place where they would level these kinds of accusations. Before we explore that, let me clear up a few things once and for all. We do not copy results from any of our competitors. Period. Full stop. We have some of the best minds in the world at work on search quality and relevance, and for a competitor to accuse any one of these people of such activity is just insulting. We do look at anonymous click stream data as one of more than a thousand inputs into our ranking algorithm. We learn from our customers as they traverse the web, a common practice in helping to improve a wide array of online services. We have been clear about this for a couple of years (see Directions on Microsoft report, June 15, 2009). Google engaged in a “honeypot” attack to trick Bing. In simple terms, Google’s “experiment” was rigged... Read More I was unable to attend the Farsight conference yesterday but watched events unfold online and wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and make sure everyone is clear about a few things. Thoughts on search quality

This morning, I will be on a panel at the Farsight Summit with some of the industry’s thought leaders to talk about search quality as we look into the future of search. Farsight is about looking 10 years into the future to explore the big industry challenges and opportunities ahead of us as we work to deliver the next generation of search. We woke up to an interesting (and interestingly timed) article by Danny Sullivan about some complaints Google has about how it says Bing ranks results. I wanted to take a moment to make a couple of points in advance of this panel so we can stay focused on the original intent of the Summit. The Bing engineering team has been working hard over the past couple of years to deliver the best search relevance and quality in the industry and for our users. This is our top priority every day. We use over 1,000 different signals and features in our ranking algorithm. A small piece of that is clickstream data we get from some of our customers, who opt-in to sharing anonymous data as they navigate the web in order to help us improve the experience for all users. To be clear, we learn from all of our customers... Read More This morning, I will be on a panel at the Farsight Summit with some of the industry’s thought leaders to talk about search quality as we look into the future of search. Which city’s team was searched most often? Ahead of Sunday’s game, we delved into the search data and conducted a survey to find out. What’s more, we created an infographic to bring the stats to life. Click on the image to see full screen and download. Top Football Search Trends: We looked at the most popular search terms associated with pro football over the course of the season. Here are some the interesting trends: If number of searches indicates who is going to win on Sunday, it looks like we’re going into overtime because the Packers and Steelers are neck and neck for total Bing searches. Take heart Dallas. If making it to the big game was based only on Bing searches, we would be watching the Cowboys compete this weekend. Brett Favre, Randy Moss and Michael Vick were in the top five most searched players. Looks like on- the-field success combined with off-the-field news can propel players to the top. And... Read More Which player would you most like to watch the big game with? Who was the best looking player on the field this season?
