    Bing it on Firefox 4

A few weeks ago, we celebrated the launch of Internet Explorer 9 and highlighted how you can get the most out of Bing on the world’s most popular browser. In our quest to make Bing super easy to use from any browser, last October we announced our work with Mozilla to make Bing one of the default search engine choices in Firefox 4. Today we are proud to showcase the work we’ve done with Mozilla to make it easier to use Bing on Mozilla Firefox 4 which shipped globally last week. Now in a few simple clicks Firefox users can set Bing as their search provider. In the right hand corner of Firefox 4, simply pull down the menu and select the Bing icon. Once set, users can type their query directly into the search bar without having to visit Bing.com first. Congratulations to Mozilla on their release and their partnership to help Firefox users get the most out of Bing. Let us know if you find this useful. Bing Feature Update: Bing News with Real...

Over the past few months , we have been working hard to help customers make more informed decisions in search by surfacing the kind of information you can only get from your friends, often in real-time. Today, we are pleased introduce two new ways to experience Twitter and Facebook on Bing. Bing News adds real-time Twitter updates: Awhile back we introduced Bing social which lets you plunge into the real-time tweet stream to uncover the latest updates on the Web. This week we took it a step further by integrating some of this real time social data into Bing news. Now alongside the latest headlines on Bing News, you will find a real-time feed with the latest updates from Twitter highlighting hot news topics. Search for a news item and immediately see what people are tweeting on the topic. As we’ve seen with the tragedy in Japan or political turmoil in the Middle East, real people are relaying timely and compelling items not captured by traditional outlets. Bing news now lets you compare and assess authoritative news analysis alongside real-time citizen journalists so you can decide which content sources you want to use. ... Introducing Project Emporia Powered Matchbox...

When discussing relevance in search, people often cite personalization as the next frontier in delivering more relevant results. Traditional methods of personalization have been based on something called ‘collaborative filtering.’ At its simplest, ‘collaborative filtering’ means if user A and user B both like something, then you can predict user A’s future “likes” based on what user B “likes.” This approach works quite well for things that are static in nature such as products, restaurants and movies. For these objects, systems are able to gather enough rating data to make future predictions because the objects don’t change all that often. Contrast that to the frenetic pace of news and real-time information where a story can materialize in a matter of minutes. How do you approach personalization in a reality where there will not be enough activity to enable collaborative filtering systems to kick in? Today, at SXSW Interactive in Austin, TX, we showcased a new approach to personalization. Rather than looking only at what others like you are interacting with on the web, the Matchbox technology... Creating a Hackathon for Good – Justice...

What if you could enlist the best minds in the tech industry to consult for your nonprofit or startup? What if you could corral the top product designers, search engine marketing experts and platform gurus from Google, Twitter, Facebook and Microsoft in one room, describe your marketing challenges and have them brainstorm areas for improvement? A few months ago, at the inaugural “social hackathon” (sponsored by Bing and Windows Live Hotmail) we did just that. In the spirit of advancing social good, folks like Chris Brogan, Beth Kanter Chris Messina, Kathy Sierra, Chelsea Howe and Leah Buley lent their time to help DonorsChoose.org brainstorm ways to address their ongoing technology and marketing challenges (things like API strategy, repeat user engagement, site design, social media marketing, etc.) Today we are pleased to make available the output of that meeting: an eBook focused on social good titled The Goodness Engine: Driving Greater Social Impact in the Digital World . The best ideas, tactics, and creative solutions from the day were distilled down into an in-depth analysis by the folks at Deep Focus and are now available for free to...
