X Games 17 Kicks Off Today: Bing’s Sponsorship...

Today marks the start of the 17 th annual ESPN Summer X Games in Los Angeles and Bing will be there and on-air all weekend. Bing is an official sponsor of this year’s X Games; from BMX Big Air to Skateboarding Tricks to Moto X Freestyle, we are excited to partner with ESPN and the Action Sports community. In the spirit of the games, we wanted to capture the essence of the “X” lifestyle in a series of short films. These features highlight folks who decided to follow their passions and surface the key decisions that led them where they are now. During the games, we will be airing these stories in prime placements starting tonight throughout the games. From pro surfer Alex Gray who decides how to live his life based on the next swell, to the Rat City Roller Girls who decided to break the conventional sports mold to successfully forge a thriving Roller Derby community, to the Krochet Kids a group of friends who decided to build a business selling hats that benefit women in Uganda. You can check out some of the features below and see the entire series at www.bing.com/originals . See behind the scenes at Krochet Kids—a group of crochet enthusiasts... Get the Jump on Back to School Shopping...

For kids, summer is in full swing. But for parents it’s time to start thinking about getting the kids ready to go back to school. Among the long list of to-dos, finding the best deals on back to school must-haves tops the list. According to a recent Bing survey, 52 percent of parents are more concerned about price than value, style, or brand when it comes to making back-to-school purchasing decisions and 87 percent check multiple stores and websites to compare prices to make sure they get the best deal. Parents are so focused on saving money that 44 percent said they will recycle their children’s clothing rather than purchase new ones. Friends opinions matter as well. A computer for school is a big investment and 60 percent of people surveyed won’t buy one without getting their friend’s input first. Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be tedious or expensive. Bing Shopping provides comparisons, price finders, allows you to share your shopping lists with your Facebook friends and allows you to see what they “like”, helping you make decisions for all your back to school must-haves. And if you’re out and about and in a rush to find... Read More For kids, summer is in full swing. But for parents it’s time to start thinking about getting the kids ready to go back to school. Tweet and Win with Dhani Jones and Bing...

At 6 foot 1 and 240 pounds, Dhani Jones may look the part of a typical NFL linebacker but when he’s not on the field with the Cincinnati Bengals, he is folding that frame into an airplane seat. . As we wrote earlier this week, Dhani’s passion for exploring new countries has taken him to over 70 countries and was the premise behind his hit TV show “Dhani Tackles the Globe,” which ran for two seasons on the Travel Channel. Now, he has compiled stories from his life, football career, and travels into a new book called “ The Sportsman: Unexpected Lessons from an Around-the-World Sports Odyssey .” When you’re planning a trip, who do you go to first? Your friends, of course. And with a well-travelled friend like Dhani you could plan one heck of a summer vacation. With that in mind, we’ve teamed with Dhani to reward five lucky @Fareologist Twitter followers with signed copies of his new book . We will be posing a question asking you to describe how you make travel decisions with friends on Wednesday, July 20 th from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. PT. To enter, simply send an @-reply to Fareologist with your answer and include the hashtag #BingTravel... Building a Better Speller

A few months ago, Bing and Microsoft Research (MSR) enlisted the help of researchers and students from around the world to take part in the Speller Challenge . The challenge aimed to tackle a familiar problem facing search engines- results based on a common misspelling or typo: This technique, called Spelling alteration, is the predominant way for search engines to translate typing errors, alternative spellings, and synonyms with the goal of providing the best results to you on the first try. However, this approach is not perfect. My spelling error could be your perfect query (and vice versa.) The Speller Challenge was designed to find a better way to determine which results a search engine should provide and how alternatives should be represented. Today, we hosted a workshop at Bing HQ where Harry Shum, Corporate Vice President of Bing presented the winners with their awards. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the program. First place : Gord Lueck - Canada Second place : Yanen Li, Huizhong Duan, ChengXiang Zhai - USA Third place : Yasser Ganjisaffar, Andrea Zilio, Sara Javanmardi, Inci Cetindil, Manik Sikka, Sandeep P. It’s Not Too Late to Book Great Summer...

With the economy still sputtering, summer vacations are on the chopping block for many people this year. In fact, a recent consumer survey from Bing Travel (conducted by Impulse Research) found some interesting items about consumers’ current attitudes and behaviors on vacations and travel. 66 percent of Americans are more likely to actually choose their vacation destination based on deals and discounts . 30 percent of survey respondents left paid vacation days on the table last year because they felt they did not have the money to go on vacation. The quest for travel deals also takes up a lot of people’s valuable time, with 91 percent of survey respondents cited visiting multiple websites when researching and booking travel and 20 percent spending at least 10 hours researching trips before booking and 59 percent spending a minimum of 3 hours. One-third of survey respondents say they’d rather get a root canal then spend hours doing the research and planning needed to book a vacation these days. Don’t despair as relaxing (and affordable) getaways are still out there. We combed through billions of fares to unearth a wealth of deals and pricing... Bing for iPad Update: Searching Without...

<Visiting from an iPad? Click here for an optimized version of this blog post: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=223315 > In April we released Bing for iPad and needless to say, we were humbled by the positive response we received. In the first three months, we had more than 5,000 ratings in the App Store and an average score of 4.7 stars (out of five stars). But what we really liked was all the great feedback on areas to improve and features to add. We’re pleased to release an update to Bing for iPad, rolling out later today in the app store. In this release we made some improvements that you asked for and are excited to introduce a new feature called Lasso . Designed for touch-friendly devices, Lasso is a new way to search with the touch of a finger. From our research, we know that many searches are inspired by things people see on the web. Today, it can be somewhat painful to search on a tablet when you’re engaged in reading something; just copying and pasting pieces of text from a webpage to a search box can take up to nine steps on the iPad. With Lasso you can circle and search in just two steps. This release also includes: an improved movie... Read More <Visiting from an iPad?
