Deluged by Daily Deals? Browse Over 200k...

Despite lots of recent news coverage about the death of daily deal sites, people still love a great deal. The number of daily deal sites may be narrowing, but there are still over 300 sites to choose from and consumer interest shows no signs of slowing down. Comscore data reveals the deals audience grew by 24 percent in the past year, and according to a recent Bing/Impulse survey, 61% of people have increased their use of daily deals in the last six months. However, people are overloaded with deals that aren’t relevant to them and nearly a quarter of the people surveyed said they are “fatigued” by the overabundance of deals. For some, the pain in finding an attractive deal is outweighing the reward. But, people are telling us if they can end the unwelcome egg hunt, they would welcome the savings. When asked, 87% of people said they would increase their use of daily deals if they could find only deals that interest them all in one place. Today, with the launch of Bing Deals , we’re doing just that. Instead of building another program, we’re harnessing deals from major providers and retailers to help you cut through the clutter and find the best... Take Action on Bing

Helping you get things done faster is a big focus for us at Bing. Whether it’s checking the status of your flight, accessing your online banking account or booking a room at a hotel, we are constantly exploring ways to help you make faster decisions. One way we do this is with “deep links”. Historically, we have used “deep links” as a way to surface popular pages within a given site. For instance, the result for United Airlines includes the links “Check in online,” “Baggage,” and “Flight Search” at the top of the page so you can quickly narrow down what you’re looking for and go directly to that part of the site. Today we are taking this a step further with the release of Action Buttons . Now when you search across 7 popular categories - including airlines, couriers (e.g. FedEx), restaurants, banks, rental cars, software downloads and hotels - you will be presented with buttons for top actions on the site, that directly take you to the page where you can complete your task. Based on how people search, our algorithms now determine top actions and corresponding links in the site for a given category... Bing Travel Forecast: Thanksgiving and...

Ready or not, it’s time to start planning for the holidays. While we’re still basking in the glow of a glorious summer, holiday travel is just around the corner. To help, the Fareologists at Bing Travel have delved into their algorithmic crystal ball to issue a preliminary forecast for the 2011 holiday travel season. Travelers in the U.S. can expect holiday cheer this season as airfare and hotel prices are expected to drop slightly. Compared with last year, domestic airfare is expected to be down 1.4 percent overall, with tickets averaging $302, as opposed to $306 last holiday. Holiday hotel costs are staying virtually flat for three- and-four- star hotels, but five-star hotels are down 8 percent from last year. Take advantage of affordable luxury this season! Given this summer’s sharp increases, it’s a relief to see travel prices normalize this holiday. Travelers looking to stay in the U.S. should be able to find some great deals this holiday, but those people planning travel to Europe or Asia will likely face a different story unless they plan ahead. While the U.S. forecast is turning up, spending the holidays abroad will come at a premium this year... Read More Ready or not, it’s time to start planning for the holidays. Adapting Search to You

Ambiguity is a tough problem for a search engine. You generally search with a clear intent in mind but, without context, the phrase you enter may have a very different meaning to someone else. For example, if you were to type “CSI” odds are you’re interested in the TV show. But, if you live in Twin Falls, you may, instead, be looking for the College of Southern Idaho. When we think about ambiguity at Bing, understanding what your query represents (primetime entertainment or a college in Idaho) is only one step. You may be interested in CSI (the show) but what you’re specifically interested in is this season’s cast, or perhaps you want to catch up on a missing episode. The intent is ambiguous here as well. In fact, over half of the queries issued on search engines are ambiguous to some degree. For many searches, there may be “hidden context” which would improve our understanding of what you’re trying to do. Whether it’s picking which movie to see or figuring out which bus to take, a more personalized search experience can help you make decisions faster. Earlier this year, we started to take on the challenges of personalized... Read More Ambiguity is a tough problem for a search engine. Affordable Fall Weekend Getaways

By Andrew Hickey, www.thebrooklynnomad.com As summer comes to a close, it’s time to think about planning the perfect fall vacation. Typically, the months between the lazy days of summer and the holiday season are less popular with travelers, which means cheap deals may be found at many top destinations across the country. So whether you’re a leaf peeper in search of some autumn foliage or a serious beach bum who would like a few more days of surf and sand, check out five of my favorite affordable fall weekend getaways. Chicago : While summertime in the Windy City is extremely popular with tourists – causing hotel rates to rise with the temperature – and the winter climate is better suited to polar bears and penguins, fall is a beautiful and affordable time to visit. If possible, plan your getaway for the Columbus Day weekend, and check out the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 9 for a truly memorable experience. Search more fall events in Chicago . Las Vegas : Sin City is sizzling in the summer, so fall is the perfect time to book a cheap flight and hotel. The CIC folks led us to the amazing volunteers at the Venture Café, and as a result we will be hosting the “Findable and Fundable” event there Thurs. Sept 15 th 5-8 pm Eastern time . Besides networking and free refreshments, the event will feature VC luminary Jacob Mullins of Shasta Ventures- early backers of Mint.com.
