Out with the Old, In with the New: Bing...

A few weeks ago, we shared the top Bing searches for 2011 which captured a snapshot of the year’s most important people, places and moments in time. With 2011 wrapping up and the New Year around the bend, we fielded a survey of over 1,000 U.S. adults on how they felt about 2011 and how they plan to ring in 2012. From resolutions to New Year’s Eve celebration plans, here’s what they had to say: 2011 This was a year of ups and downs. According to our survey, 65 percent of 18-24 year olds were positive about 2011 and are hoping for much of the same in the New Year. However, 45-54 year olds were slightly less optimistic – 76 percent said that it was a hard year and they’re hoping 2012 will be better. Regardless of your attitude, make 2012 the year for you. Whether you’re job-hunting, planning a move or making room for another family member, Bing.com will help you navigate the year ahead. RESOLUTION Losing weight is the top New Year’s resolution for both men and women ( 35 and 47 percent , respectively), while 32 percent of respondents noted that they don’t plan to make a New Year’s resolution at all... Microsoft & RocketSpace: Feeding the...

Since launching Bing in 2009, we’ve had to overcome many of the classic challenges facing startups. As a service trying to disrupt a mature space – we appreciate the need to stay nimble, tenacious and creative. As a result, we have an affinity for startups and the innovations, relentless energy and tremendous support coming out of that community. To that end, we recently created the Bing Booster program as a way for us to give back. The offering is a pilot program in partnership with Microsoft BizSpark available in select US tech hubs – New York City, Boston, San Francisco/Bay Area – designed to help accelerate the success of startups by offering at no cost, tools and resources, technical guidance and market visibility. We know the startup scene is changing – capital requirements are lower, entrepreneurs abound, and open APIs and services can reduce development times. The days of heavy infrastructure requirements and massive overhead to create world-changing tech are behind us. Microsoft’s goal is to identify what resources are most helpful to this new batch of innovators and provide them through the BizSpark program. And to keep you apprised... Bing on Xbox Team: Don’t Be Shy About Talking...

On Tuesday, with the Holiday release of Xbox LIVE we introduced Bing on Xbox which lets you sort through all of your entertainment content – including movies, games, TV shows, apps and music – with just the sound of your voice. With the updates landing in people’s living rooms this week, Michelle Holtmann on the core search team came by to talk with us about what it was like working on the project. Michelle is the Principal Program Manager Lead for Bing and led the collaboration with the Xbox Team to bring these capabilities to market. Bing Community (BC): Can you talk about how the project was conceived? Michelle Holtmann (MH): We started with the goal of making the question “where is the remote?” obsolete. With Xbox and Kinect we are collectively working on this magical scenario where “you are the remote” and voice search is the natural extension of that. BC: Where did the team start with the project? MH: We started by getting to know the customer. Working closely with the Xbox team, we looked at a tremendous amount of usage data that told us that when it comes to entertainment, people don’t lack selection. The challenge... Instead, what if the entertainment you wanted to have was simple, discoverable and exactly what you wanted at that particular moment? With the release of the new Xbox 360 experience the future of entertainment search is here. With Bing on Xbox you can sort through all of your entertainment content – including movies, games, TV shows, apps and music – with just the sound of your voice. Beginning December 6th and in the coming months, voice search with Bing on Xbox will start to roll out, enabling you to easily find the entertainment you’re looking for, across: Netflix, Hulu Plus, Comcast Xfinity on Demand, HBO Go, Zune and more across Xbox LIVE. Bing on Xbox opens up living room entertainment the same way search engines opened up the web. When you think about the state of entertainment, there isn’t a lack of selection, the challenge is finding what you want in a timely manner. Now when you say “Xbox, Bing, Star Trek,” Bing will show you all the available options for the movies, music, games, on-demand TV and...
