Bing Announces News, Sports and Travel...

Today the Windows Team announced the availability of the Windows 8 Release Preview, ready for download . Building off the momentum from the three apps that we previously announced at the Consumer Preview in Barcelona, we’re excited to announce three additional Bing-powered apps in the Windows 8 Release Preview: News, Sports, and Travel. Similar to the Finance, Weather, and Maps apps we previously announced, each app is optimized for touch devices but works with a mouse and keyboard as well. These apps are visually organized, intuitive to use, easy to personalize, and they offer content from multiple, trusted providers. They let you complete key tasks such as browsing news headlines, checking sports scores, and finding a flight or hotel room quickly and confidently. Here’s a closer look at each app: The News app is a beautiful, photo-rich app that makes it easy for you to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in the world from reliable sources from around the web. Swipe through the app for a quick read of national, world, technology, entertainment, politics, sports, and health headlines and tap on specific headlines to read the full article. With the My News feature... Read More Today the Windows Team announced the availability of the Windows 8 Release Preview, ready for download . We're pleased to announce that Photosynth, the acclaimed mobile panorama app, is now available on Windows Phone. Get Photosynth for free from the Windows Phone Marketplace for phones running Windows Phone 7.5 or higher. Screenshot from a panorama captured via Photosynth on Windows Phone of a camp on Mt. Baker, WA.See the full pano here. Sometimes a single photo - even a wide angle photo - doesn't do a place justice. Whether it's the view off a cliff , or inside an incredible cathedral , we've all been to places that cry out for a full 360 panorama. Photosynth is the only mobile app that can stitch a full sphere. That's 360 degrees horizontally and vertically. The Photosynth app for Windows Phone feels like magic. Start it up, move the camera around, and watch your panorama fill in. Make a 360 revolution and watch it join up. Capture the floor and ceiling too. When you're done the shots are automatically stitched together, and the results are beautiful and immersive. Start Doing More Now: Try the New Bing...

Last week at the Search Summit in San Francisco, we showcased a brand new way to search that is designed to help you interact with friends and take action without compromising the core search experience. Starting today, people in the United States can give it a try at www.bing.com/new . Since most of you weren’t able to attend the summit, Qi Lu, Harry Shum and I shot a short video where we discuss the design decisions and technical underpinnings behind this release. Watch as WMV

As we discussed last week, Bing now integrates search and people in our social networks through a dedicated social “sidebar.” With sidebar, Bing brings together the best of the web, with what experts and your friends know, giving you the confidence to act. This new way to search lets you share, discover, and interact with friends like you do in real life. If you’re on the go, you’ll notice we’ve optimized the layout and placement of the social results on the mobile device... Introducing the New Bing: Spend Less Time...

In 2009, we launched Bing with a simple proposition: people should expect more from a search engine. Our aim has always been to help you do more with search, and over the past three years we have made exciting strides to realize that vision. Today we are taking a big step forward as we begin rolling out what is the most significant update to Bing since we launched three years ago. Over the coming weeks, we will be introducing a brand new way to search designed to help you take action and interact with friends and experts without compromising the core search experience. First a little background. The search industry was built on keywords, links and labels – static nouns pointing to pages. This approach is great for finding sites but search is about more than simply finding information, it’s also about taking action. Whether it’s booking a flight, reading an article or buying a new pair of shoes, 68% of people tell us they expect to get something done when they type into a search box. Now it’s possible to do more than find pages with search. You are able to share nearly everything you do, including where you are and who you are, in real-time. From rich... Viva la Human Revolution

At Bing we are always looking for ways to do a better job building a product that can help you do more, achieve more, and feel more confident about your outcomes. As we sit and dream up the next big set of things we can build to help in this quest, something has kept nagging at us. Namely that too many of the things we see being built today in our industry put the technology first. All too often people have to learn new terms, new interaction models, and entirely new user experiences just to do something as simple as watch a DVD on their home TV. Even for me, I was sitting at my desk hunting for another USB drive and I emptied my pockets. Besides my 4 screens, I had 5 phones, 3 laptops, and an old Xbox controller someone left in my office – I am literally a geek surrounded by tech. But the most meaningful thing to me was the scanned drawing my daughter did on my laptop and it really reminded me of the humanity of the tech should be there in front of us. As technology becomes more integral to our lives and our participation in society, we thought it would be interesting to go back to basics. We questioned the design philosophy of things, wondering if rethinking technical product... Bing Gets a New Look

Bing is getting a new look. Starting today you will notice a fresh, de-cluttered experience designed to help you find the results you want faster. Over the past few months, we’ve run dozens of experiments to determine how you read our pages to deliver the link you’re looking for. Based on that feedback, we’ve tuned the site to make the entire page easier to scan, removing unnecessary distractions, and making the overall experience more predictable and useful. This refreshed design helps you do more with search—and gives us a canvas for bringing future innovation to you. The results themselves are cleaner. Removing the “left rail” and minimizing the header raises the level of consistency and predictability while making it easier to scan the page and quickly find the information you want. Increasing the space between lines improves readability and optimizes the page for touch devices. Putting all our result annotations and social data in one consistent spot makes the page easier to use and understand. The new experience is more than skin-deep. You will also notice faster page-load times and improved relevance under the hood. After all, our goal... Read More Bing is getting a new look.
