Bing Loves Women Entrepreneurs at Women...

We are returning to San Francisco for the Women 2.0 Conference and are looking forward to meeting the hundreds of women entrepreneurs who are taking the world by storm! To do our part, we are offering support to help women-founded startups achieve liftoff. As sponsoring hosts of the conference lunch, (aside from food) we’ll be offering mentorship opportunities from subject matter experts who have insights around investment and funding. Representatives from the Bing Fund ,will be looking for startups that are building disruptive online experiences and be on hand to answer questions about the fund including what they look for in a startup and what kinds of investments Microsoft makes in Bing Fund companies. Folks who remember the Bing Booster program for startups from last year will recall Jacob Mullins of Shasta Ventures - Mullins will also be joining the mentor tables to give VC advice to consumer internet startup founders. In addition to tips for securing venture capital we will also be providing advice on fundamentals. After all, the first thing VCs want to see is – do you have customers and traffic to your Web site? How much traction do you have? And so we are... Bing Your Brain: Choice Overload

First, a quick introduction: my name is Matt Wallaert, and I'm a behavioral scientist here at Bing. I work at the intersection of psychology and technology, and as part of that, you'll see start seeing articles from me on the Bing blog as part of a new series we're calling "Bing Your Brain.” Eight years ago, social psychologist Barry Schwartz gave an influential TED on “ The Paradox of Choice ”: that even though it seems like more choices should always be better, we are actually less happy when we have too many choices. This is because of a phenomenon psychologists call choice overload and if you’ve ever stood in the salad dressing aisle at your local supermarket, you know exactly what it is. There are several reasons that having too many choices can make us unhappy. First, it can create post-decisional regret, sometimes called buyer’s remorse: that feeling you get after you make a decision and instantly start worrying that another option might have been better. The more options, the more worry. Second, even if we end up with a choice we are confident about, more choices mean that searching takes longer. So even when we find something that makes... Make a Great Impression with Bing Tags

First impressions are important – and in the digital age, putting your best foot forward on the web is just as critical. Last year, we launched Bing Tags * to let you tag yourself or your friends in pages across the web. By connecting with Facebook on Bing, you could also see which pages your Facebook friends have been tagged in. Today, based on your feedback, we’re taking Bing Tags one step further by making your tags visible to a broader audience. Now simply select the pages you want to tag and those pages will show up in search results. Whether it’s your Twitter profile, blog, or that art portfolio you’re proud of – Bing Tags lets you highlight the pages that best represent you. You can also help your friends by tagging relevant pages about them. Was your friend quoted in the local paper, or published in an online journal? Or maybe they have a fantastic photo blog to show off? Just tag your friends to show them some love, and once they’ve approved the tags, the pages will appear on Bing. Remember - you have full control over what is shown to the public on Bing. If a friend tags you to a page, we will not surface it outside your network until... Bing Social Updates Arrive Today: For Every...

Search is great at retrieving information from across the web to help you find what you’re looking for and get more done. But, more often than not, we look to the people we trust to help us make decisions and get stuff done. At Bing, we believe that for anything you want to get done on Bing, there is at least one person out there who can help. That’s why we introduced a new information architecture with a three column design that focuses on bringing you information from the web to help you take action and interact with friends without compromising the core search experience. Imagine you’re planning a trip to New York. When using Bing, you not only will find great search results about the city, but you’ll also find information from your friends who live or have visited in the sidebar. Now you know which of your friends might have the inside scoop on what to do, or better yet might want to join you. We think matching your search intent with relevant people and experts is a profound change to the way we use search, and can make it more useful than ever before. We began this work last June, and now with our latest update, we’re expanding beyond “Likes... Bing Fund Welcomes LikeBright

We believe technology is most powerful when it helps people solve problems. Search is designed to help us find relevant information that both expands our understanding of the world and helps us more quickly get things done. Similarly, social media allows us to cut through the physical limitations of keeping in touch with the people we care about by breaking down the barriers of distance and time. These solutions are simple, yet powerful. In keeping with this idea, we believe our newest Bing Fund inductee has the potential to fill a void experienced by millions – finding a match online. Today, we’re excited to announce the addition of LikeBright , a matchmaking startup, into the Bing Fund. Based in Seattle, LikeBright takes an innovative approach to online dating by infusing the power of social into what has traditionally been a solitary activity. Say goodbye to endless questionnaires and interactions with total strangers. By enlisting the help of your trusted network, friends and family can now help people meet their friends’ friends and match friends up. Because, just like in the real world, who’s better to help you meet the right person than somebody... Read More We believe technology is most powerful when it helps people solve problems. Evolving Search on Facebook

Almost two-and-a-half years ago, Bing and Facebook started down a path to make search more social. We both firmly believed that people possess the keys to unlock a world of knowledge previously inaccessible via traditional search. There was increasingly an opportunity to improve discovery on the web by giving people an easy way to use their friends as a “search signal.” Even before we started making search more social with Facebook, Bing provided web search for the social network. It was, admittedly, only the beginning. Earlier today during a press event at Facebook headquarters, Facebook showed the work they have done to allow you to search the content you have shared on Facebook – called Graph Search. This means people can search across all their content and connections on Facebook to discover new people, places and things. As part of this product, our two engineering teams worked together to advance a unified search experience. That means that when people want to search beyond Facebook, they see web search results from Bing with social context and additional information such as Facebook pages. To the Facebook user, they will not only see useful results... Read More Almost two-and-a-half years ago, Bing and Facebook started down a path to make search more social. Bing Search Quality Insights: Building...

Is it Swarzinegar, Swarneger, Scwarznagger or Schwartiznegar? These are just a few of more than 2,000 different ways users on Bing have typed their queries in hope of searching for “Schwarzenegger.” The aim of the Bing Speller is to correct these queries so users receive relevant web results that match their intent even when their query is misspelt. A great speller makes a search engine feel like magic to the users. In this blog my colleague Jim Kleban provides an overview of Bing Speller technology with some examples of recent improvements we just shipped in December. - Dr. Harry Shum, Corporate Vice President, Bing R&D Bing’s Speller processes tens of millions of data points mined from searches, web pages, clicks and user actions to help you find the right “Schwarzenegger.” In close collaboration with Microsoft Research we have developed advanced machine learning models to build a great speller.
