Bing at Build 2013: Weaving an Intelligent...

With the explosion of always-connected devices – from smartphones, tablets and “phablets” to internet connected TVs and wearables, the daily use of technology in our lives is becoming more central. People are using multiple devices and a galaxy of specialized applications over the course of a day to do things previously constrained to the offline world. From getting real-time directions to booking a table for dinner, people expect to be able to do things using these devices and applications, not just find information. This increased reliance ratchets up peoples’ expectations and has upped the ante for amazing experiences. However, this new world is not living up to its potential because the complexity of designing applications that meet the enhanced expectations is becoming increasingly difficult. The scale and technical horsepower required to build digital models of the physical world, the ability to turn simple web data into actionable knowledge and ways to employ naturalistic input like sight and sound to create amazing experiences are beyond the grasp of all but a few companies. We think it is time to democratize this technology to usher in a better future... Bing Finance Tracker for Excel

Bing and Office have partnered on one way to bring the power of live internet data and the security of a local app together with the My Portfolio template . The template is available for free in the Office Store for use with Excel 2013. You can use it to track specific stocks and funds in your investment portfolio with quotes, charts, and all the latest news, creating a tailored look to surface the data that matters most to you. It’s a great example of how Bing is about more than just a search box. Traditionally, the internet has been a place to find information that stands apart from the places we tend to use that information. That is, rather like a dictionary or encyclopedia, the information found on the internet is often taken offline into other parts of our lives, whether it is a Word document or a conversation with a friend. But that model is changing. At Bing, we are powering more and more experiences that take place outside of a web browser. Whether it is one of the Bing-powered apps on Windows 8 or an API, like our translation service ( now featuring Klingon! ), Bing can organize and move information from the web into non-browser experiences so that you can use it... Calling All Schools: Join The Bing For...

People search in many different places, for many different things. And while we tend to talk about Bing as one search engine, it is a little more like a Swiss Army knife, responding to different contexts and intents to provide the best possible results to help people find and do what they need. Today, we're announcing a new initiative to give one context in particular a special treatment: we’re helping our nation’s schools to teach digital literacy skills. Starting later this year, Bing For Schools will offer schools in the U.S. the option to tailor the Bing experience for K-12 students by removing all advertisements from search results, enhancing privacy protections and the filtering of adult content, and adding specialized learning features to enhance digital literacy. The program is completely voluntary: schools have the choice of participating or keeping the normal Bing experience. For those that opt-in, Bing will enable the experience across all searches from within the school’s network on Bing.com, without any need for special software or a different search address. And of course, Bing For Schools is free for any school or districts wishing to participate... Read More People search in many different places, for many different things. Trying New Approaches to Social and Community...

At Bing, we believe that for every search there is someone who can help. During the last year, we’ve introduced features that pull knowledge from friends and experts alongside traditional search results and are continuing to explore the intersection of social and the collective community of the web to help people do more with their experience. On any given day, Bing runs hundreds of experiments that help us improve the search experience . Most are nearly invisible, ranging from small tweaks to the search algorithm, to changes in our ad selection, to optimizations in the color, size, and placement of features. In addition to minor tests, we also try out more noticeable features to determine whether they are helpful, engaging, and informative. We are currently testing several of these features, which a limited number of people may notice over the next few months. Although people can't opt-in to experiments, if you do notice something different, we encourage you to give it a try. Introducing Bing Boards While we won’t announce every experiment, today we wanted to put the spotlight on one called Bing Boards. Most people spend at least some time every day on sites... Exciting New Chapter in Bing’s Collaboration...

Today at WWDC Apple announced iOS 7, which brings Bing web search integration to Siri, Apple's breakthrough personal assistant, for the first time. Starting this fall with iOS 7, Bing will power Siri's new integrated web search. When users ask Siri a question either the specific answer or web search links will now be delivered automatically so users can find information even faster. Bing was designed from the outset to be a great place for web search helping customers quickly find what they are looking for and get more out of search. We are thrilled that all the great results people have come to know and love on Bing.com will now be available to Siri users on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Making sure customers can have access to the power of Bing where and when they need it has been a big focus of the work we have done over the past few years, and we are excited to work with Apple to deliver it to Siri users this fall. - Derrick Connell, Corporate Vice President, Bing Today at WWDC Apple announced iOS 7, which brings Bing web search integration to Siri, Apple's breakthrough personal assistant, for the first time.
