    Bing.com Gets More Personal

At Build, we previewed Cortana powered by Bing which will ship with the upcoming release of Windows Phone 8.1. One of the things that makes Cortana so helpful is her ability to learn about your preferences and interests. As we talked about last week, it is the Bing platform that makes this possible, earned through years of machine learning and big data experience doing web search Starting today, we are unveiling a set of personalized cards on the Bing homepage that will help you keep track of things that matter to you. Set up your interests in Bing settings and you will start seeing personalized news, weather, flights, and stocks with more to come - all as part of the search experience. Let’s see how this works. Sign in to your Microsoft account and set-up your interests to let Bing know what it should track. Then, when it’s appropriate, Bing will let you know if for example your stock changes or flight is delayed. The best part? As long as you're signed in, Bing will remember your interests and notify you, as appropriate, across a range of Bing-powered Microsoft services, such as Cortana and the Bing Sports app, for example. Integrating Store Apps with Cortana in...

Last week, we took the stage in San Francisco and proudly announced Cortana as part of the Windows Phone 8.1 update. You’ve likely already read about how Cortana will use the power of Bing to deliver personalized, natural experiences to users. What you may not have read is how Cortana empowers application developers to deliver robust, natural experiences of their own. Windows Phone 8.0, our previous release, brought with it the Voice Commands feature . Voice Commands on 8.0 enable an application developer to author simple phrases and lists of words that together allow a user to quickly navigate into a specific experience within an application; for example, “Hulu, show me my queue.” The biggest limitation of Voice Commands was that the full text of the commands themselves needed to be known ahead of time—this made them difficult to use for searching, social networking, or anything else with a large vocabulary. We knew our developers needed more and we wanted more ourselves—just check out the kinds of things that our team thought up when asked what they’d like to do: To make these kinds of interactions possible, we’ve introduced new... Bing at Build 2014: More Personal, Intelligent...

For Bing, the future of search is not about more search boxes – it’s about building a platform that enables applications and devices to empower people with knowledge and help them do more - not just search more. Today, we showcased work we did to enable Cortana on Windows Phone . By building a new set of Bing-powered services, we enabled a new experience that is more personal, intelligent and helpful. Last year at Build, we took the first step towards making Bing-powered services available to 3 rd party developers via a set of easy-to-implement controls. Today we are taking it a step further with three new options for developers and publishers: App Linking: Helping People Discover Your Acts and Take Action App linking makes your Windows and Windows Phone apps more discoverable and enables consumers to get to the relevant page or take action in your app with a single click. Following a few simple steps, you can now easily link your app to Bing search results when users search from Windows Smart Search and Windows Phone. And because search is intent-driven, your app shows up when it’s relevant to what someone is searching for. For example, in the case of Amazon... Making Search More Personal

The world is a chaotic place. From the billions of Facebook updates made each day to the constant tick of stock quotes for the 3,571 companies listed on NASDAQ, there are trillions of pieces of information about the real world swirling out there every day. While there are plenty of apps and services that can help us manage what’s happening, we’re often left feeling buried by the weight of it all. Instead of feeling empowered, we feel overwhelmed. At Bing, we believe that the technologies that power of search are uniquely positioned to provide you with a more natural and personal approach to this problem. By now, you’ve heard about the upcoming release of Windows Phone including the introduction of the personal assistant, Cortana, which is powered by Bing. You can read about this in more detail in Joe Belfiore’s post here . The Bing Platform: More Personal, Helpful and Intelligent This post will explore the technology behind Cortana, Bing.com and other Microsoft products that is making all of this possible, a platform that combines Bing’s massive investments towards indexing the real world, with speech recognition , language and entity understanding... 150 Million More Reasons to Love Bing Everyday

At Bing, we understand that search is more than simply finding information and browsing a collection of blue links pointing to pages around the web. We’ve talked about doing instead of searching and how Bing continues to expand its approach to understand the actual world around us. Today, you’ll see this come to life on Bing.com in a feature called Snapshot. Snapshot brings together information that you need at a glance, with rich connections to deeper information on the people, places, and things you care about made possible by our deep understanding of the real world. To accomplish this, Bing now tracks billions of entities and perhaps more importantly, the billions of relationships between them, all to get you the right data instantly while you search. New Entities: Introducing Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists and Real Estate Properties Over the last few months we have surfaced on Bing.com an additional 150 million entities encompassing web actives, doctors, dentists, lawyers, and individual real estate properties. Now when you search for a medical professional, e.g., { dr rhonda newton sammamish }, Bing returns the Snapshot of the professional that includes their... Find It Faster with Image Match

Searching for the right image can be tough. After sorting through hundreds of images, you finally find a picture you like but unfortunately it’s low resolution or an odd dimension leaving you to go back to scrolling through the results pages. To take the hassle out of this process we’re introducing a new feature that allows you to match an image in a few simple clicks. How does it work? Now when you’re browsing images you will see a button at the bottom of the page that reads “Image Match.” When you click on the button, Bing will show you a list of different size images that you can then narrow down by size. If you want to see all images, click on view all sizes. If you come across an image online and want to find more examples, hit ‘image match’ near the search box on Bing.com/images and paste the specific image URL. Alternatively, if you have a popular or well-known picture on your computer that you want to match, you can also upload directly to Bing.com/Images and we’ll match the results. The experience will be rolling out to users over the course of the coming days. Try it out and let us know what you... Read More Searching for the right image can be tough. The 2014 Awards Season came to a close last night with the 86 th annual Academy Awards, and the show certainly did not disappoint. From dazzling red carpet looks, to surprising wins, Bing monitored the pulse of viewers and fans to see the most searched moments throughout the evening. This and more can all be found at bing.com/awards . The night was kicked off with some great fashion on the red carpet including Cate Blanchett and Lupita Nyong'o. It was Charlize Theron's black Dior dress though that wowed the crowd and caused the largest spike in searches of all the leading ladies’ red carpet looks. Another early favorite was the acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor. While many believed Jared Leto was a shoe-in to win for his riveting role in Dallas Buyers Club, the audience was surprised and moved during his acceptance speech when Leto took the time to thank his hard-working mom. Immediately following his speech, searches for "Jared Leto's Mom" spiked significantly. The searches continued throughout the night with Ellen’s more lighthearted moments. Search and Taxes

Let’s face it, unless you are an accountant or work for the IRS, tax season probably isn’t a time of year you look forward to. In fact, a recent survey by Bing and Impulse Research revealed that one in four people would rather clean their house from top to bottom than file their taxes. While it’s not one of people’s favorite things to do, taxes is one of the most commonly searched topics, with spikes for tax-related searches starting in January and continuing through April. When we looked at the spiking searches related to taxes, we realized that the vast majority of people were looking for one type of thing: tax forms. This makes sense given almost two thirds of U.S. citizens file their own taxes. With that insight in mind, we set out to make finding, accessing and downloading forms as streamlined as possible. When you search for tax forms or IRS forms (the most common tax related searches) you’ll see an optimized user experience providing you with instant access to tax forms and related documents. If you know which form you’re looking for (e.g. 1040 ) we show you relevant information and quick links but if you don’t know where to... Timeline: Understanding Important Events...

At Bing we are continuing to expand our collection of entities (people, places and things) and deepen our understanding about them. Our goal is to provide you with more insight into these entities so you can quickly discover useful information and in turn, get things done faster when you search on Bing. Introducing Timeline Over the past few weeks, we have been rolling out a new feature called “Timeline” that takes these efforts further. We now show you important events in the timeline of influential or famous people’s lives. In the case of Henry Ford , we highlight several events of Henry’s life including his marriage and early career of farming and running a saw-mill in 1888, incorporating the Ford Motor Company in 1903, and his retirement from the company in 1918. Another timely example of this can be found around Olympic athletes. In the case of Ashley Wagner , who is skating in the Sochi games, a simple search of her name yields a chronology of her career leading to this year’s Olympics. Some lives have more unusual sign posts than others. Take the life of Vincent Van Gogh who toiled in obscurity until his works were rediscovered...
