If you’re anything like me, you haven’t made any travel plans yet for Labor Day weekend. Fortunately, it’s not too late. Below, I’ve graphed out the Bing Travel 100 Index for trips that depart on the Friday before Labor Day:
There are a few things worth noticing. First, average prices for 2009 are considerably cheaper than they were last year. And second, prices for this departure date were less expensive back in June than they are today. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about that now. But third, and most importantly, fares still haven’t begun the huge run-up that we typically see approaching the holiday. And it’s safe to say that prices will start rising soon, so now’s a great time to shop if you’re thinking of making travel plans.
As always, the best way to save is by being flexible with your travel dates. Consider the average price for different trips over Labor Day weekend. For example, the popular Friday-to-Monday trip averages $338 across all the markets we track. But by extending your trip until Tuesday, you’ll save $37 per ticket on average, a savings of 11%. And then, if you also depart on Saturday (instead of Friday), the average fare drops to $276 — 18% less than the peak trip!
Also, our data suggests that there isn’t a particular destination that’s likely to be cheap over the long weekend, so you have to look at the fares for the particular market you’re considering. From Atlanta, for example, airfare to Orlando is down 28% year-over-year. But from Austin, you’ll actually pay 3% more than you would have in 2008. And from Columbus, airfare to Boston is down more than 50% over last year. But from Portland, prices have risen 9%!

Thanks updating to save money.
Great job, I really needed this for my tickets and to go ahead and buy them now.
I have been looking at Thanksgiving deals and the site keeps telling me to wait. So far, all flights have gone up. Does Bing take holidays into account in its predictions?
It's very good!

I guess this tool is only for the US? It is a pity that Bing is so US-focused, becaus in Europe we also like a greater alternative for Google.
