Destinations in danger

It’s a fact of life in the 21st century: Many of the world’s most priceless treasures — both natural wonders and triumphs of human creativity — are in peril. Global warming is only the tip of the shrinking iceberg, so to speak. Some places are in danger because of invasive species, overdevelopment or simply being loved to death by well-meaning people.

A new Bing Travel slide show presents some of the world’s most endangered destinations, places whose unique characteristics and pristine beauty are all too fragile. Our list includes Hawaii, whose long-isolated plants and animals are under assault from alien species; the Great Barrier Reef, where rising ocean temperatures are bleaching the reef’s coral; the ancient Peruvian city of Chan Chan, suffering from erosion thanks to frequent El Niño storms; and the Galapagos Islands, where hordes of tourists have led to the degradation of a destination that was the first-ever entry on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

Which places around the world are on your endangered destinations list? Do you think that tourists should avoid visiting such fragile places, or travel now to see them before it’s too late? Share your thoughts with other travelers in the comments section.

  • i like all of them aspecialy joel grusses

  • hello gany how is ya

  • very interesting i didnt know

  • very interesting i didnt know

  • Nice!

  • "...or travel now to see them before it’s too late?"

    > why not, tourism developement can be responsible. tourism is not necessarily synonymous with danger.

  • To think that we've had such a negative impact on the planet is astounding.

  • I've been to the Great Barrier Reef a number of times. It is a great place to go Scuba diving, kayaking, snokelling, boating, swimming, etc. Very sad to think that my children might not be able to enjoy it.

  • Talking about dangerous places? Will you consider Juárez and Tijuana Mexico as such? Even the police are found to be running scared from the drug gands...

  • The secret solution for preserving nature and doing tourisme at the same time is what I call "Ecotourisme". In other terms, Tourisme + Ecology. That's my secret.

  • WOw. This is so interesting. But nothing i havent heard before. Its amazing how our world is being destryed and we know about it but can't seem to take action. Weve done more damage to the planet in 50 years than its been here.

  • Bali is an endangered location. The most tourists in it's history are visiting this year. After the movie, "Eat, Pray, Love" comes out it'll be over. The Balinese are seeing their young into drugs and alcoholism like never before. Save Bali, don't come!

  • With brief interuptions such as the "little ice age" a few hundred years ago, the glaciers have been retreating for 16,000 years.  I certainly don't see any more in Michigan, it must be global warming!

The fact is that the earth doesn't have to warm any more for these events to occur.  Each year, more ice is lost than is created, simply because we're NOT in an ice age.  Give it a rest already.

  • Wouldn't it be smart to actually, I don't know, not visit a lot of these places? For example, Glacier National Park will continue to warm undoubtedly if people take helicopter rides and boat rides to go see it. Better yet, don't go to Barrow, Alaska by taking your fancy rides to get there. Do the polar bears a favor and don't make the warming faster than it already is. So do everyone a favor and not travel to the places you know that it will alter the landscape by going.

This article actually saddens me that our world is in peril. Now if we can all just agree that global warming is an issue and we need to do something about it....
