When was the last time you stared at a wondrous artifact of mankind with your jaw agape?
For me, it was a few months ago, when I set the alarm clock for just before dawn. I crawled out of bed, got dressed and walked west down my street in Redmond, Wash. SpaceWeather.com had alerted me in e-mail that the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station would be performing a double fly-by in the pre-dawn darkness. Like clockwork, they flew over my neighborhood like bright beacons. True, they were about 200 miles high, so they looked a bit like fireflies. Still, the sight was awesome to behold.
In a new slideshow on Bing Travel, we present 15 man-made marvels worth gaping at. The 12-story Henderson Waves pedestrian bridge undulates over part of Singapore. The Ledge at Willis Tower lets you stand in a five-sided glass balcony that is suspended 1,353 feet in the air over Chicago. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas made its debut in 2009 as the world’s largest cruise ship. It’s nearly five times the gross tonnage of the Titanic and 1 1/2 times longer than the U.S. Capitol building. And we explore other spectacular bridges, buildings, dams, flying objects and even a man-made island so large it can be seen from space.
