    "Thank You for Your Cooperation"...

"Thank You for Your Cooperation": Robocop and the Future of Search One of the great things about technology - search in particular - is the chance to constantly explore where the world is headed. Parsing through current trends and dreaming up innovations that will be coming to light in the coming years can seem a lot like science fiction. So it was a natural fit when Sony Pictures asked us to come up with a concept for search in the not-too-distant future to showcase in the upcoming Robocop film (opening this week.) Of course, all of us at Microsoft were huge fans of the original Robocop character, and we are excited to be a part of the project. Since the film is set in 2028 (and not, say, 3028), the team wanted a vision for Bing that was true to the story and innovations on the horizon, but still very much grounded in today’s reality. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to the Minority Report there is a long precedent of amazing visions of what technology will look like in the future. Microsoft is working to solve some very hard problems around voice recognition, image recognition, dimensional displays and other “natural user inputs” like gestures and eye gaze... Bing dedicates homepage to Shooting Star...

Continuing with our Help Your Britain campaign, today marks the 14th user-nominated charity to be showcased on Bing. There are more than 187,000 registered charities across Great Britain with a story to be told, many of whom will never be heard due to the lack of resources at their disposal. We’re shining the spotlight on these unsung British heroes as part of our long-term Help Your Britain Campaign. For more details about the campaign please go to: www.bing.com/HelpYourBritain . Today we are highlighting Shooting Star and CHASE and the work it does providing hospice services for over 600 families living in Western London, Surrey and West Sussex… Every new parent struggles finding time for themselves and each other. Imagine how much that is magnified for a couple looking after a very sick child. Evelyne explains how Shooting Star and CHASE’s Hospice at Home and respite stays make her and partner Thomas even better parents. Evelyne’s son Tuffel defied all medical odds when he was born 15 months ago. Everything seemed to be on freeze frame as Evelyne struggled to register the consultant’s words about her newborn son – “We don’t... “Xbox, Bing – Deliver Me a Whole New Way...

When we watched Star Trek decades ago, the idea of talking to a computer seemed like pure science fiction. In addition to combining games, music, movies, and live TV into one amazing device, every Xbox One utilizes the power of Bing and Kinect to make it fast, easy and natural to find, play, watch, and listen to whatever you want. Bing makes finding the entertainment you want easier than ever on Xbox One. Whether your game, show, song or movie is in an app, on your console, or in our own Xbox Music or Xbox Video, the same instant search technology that powers Bing web search also brings your entertainment results together beautifully on your TV. New Music Video Search Arrives

As Bob Marley once said “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” It is in that spirit that we are releasing a new way to explore, discover and browse music videos on Bing. Built from the ground up to make it easier for you to access the best music videos available on the web, our new music video experience was designed with music lovers in mind. Whether you’re looking for videos of songs and artists you are already familiar with (like Led Zeppelin and Justin Timberlake ) or you’re looking to discover the next-up-and-coming artist or revisiting the classics, we’ve got you covered. How Does it Work? Let’s say you’re searching for Tighten Up by the Black Keys . You will see the most popular video showcased in the top-left of the screen. Harnessing Bing’s machine learning capabilities, the most relevant and popular music video for an artist, album or song is showcased in the upper right of the screen. Because we know that quality videos don’t just come from one place, we showcase videos from leading sites including YouTube, Vimeo, MTV, Artist Direct and more. Instead of making you click through to... Search Has Changed

Ten years ago, you basically had one choice for search: Google. They were simply light years ahead. But that was ten years ago and search has evolved. Search has moved from simply finding general information on the web to a contextual, rich experience. And just as the nature of search has changed, so have the providers. While many people still use Google, for many, it is simply a habit: Google is what they started using ten years ago and many people haven’t taken the time to see what else is out there. Which is why the following fact will surprise many people: in a recent blind study, using the UK’s most popular web searches, people preferred Bing web search results to Google’s. What do you mean when you say people preferred Bing results? The study has a fairly simple design; think of it like a blind taste test. During the test, Bing and Google web search results were shown side-by-side on one page, with all the branding removed so that users were ‘blind’ to what search engine the results came from. To keep it an apples-to-apples comparison of just the algorithmic web search results, any ads or other features were also removed. Participants... New Bing Video Experience Lets You Browse...

Today the completely re-imagined search experience for video on Bing has launched in the UK following its availability in the US since early September. Designed from the ground up, the new experience includes streamlined navigation showcasing larger and higher resolution previews so you can quickly browse, discover and view videos on the web. We know there is more than one great video service out there and that’s why we showcase the best the web has to offer. On Bing you can not only find great videos from YouTube, Hulu and Vimeo, but also content from MSN and more. Let’s take a look at the changes: Pop-out Hover Preview: Rather than making you travel to a site to see if a video is the one you’re looking for, we updated our preview mode so now you can simply roll the cursor over the video thumbnail to see a short preview. We also expanded the information displayed about a video to speed up your search and now show favicons from the top sites, view counts, descriptions, and bold your search terms in the titles. Additionally, we’ve added a control for our previews so you can adjust the volume level of the preview playback. NEW ... Bing on iOS

Bing is breaking out of the search box. This week we introduced a new, modern experience that reflects Bing’s increasingly important role as a service layer across Microsoft and beyond. With this redesign, people can now get things done faster, regardless of the device they are using. Continuing that trend, with the release of iOS 7 this week, you can now experience Bing search results in Siri. Bing search within Siri makes it easier than ever to find what you need by delivering various types of results – so you don’t have to go to your browser to look at the same list of results. For example, when you ask Siri a question, you will either see a specific answer or search results from Bing, including web links, related searches, images and video: With Bing seamlessly integrated into Siri, people can easily find what they’re looking for and do more on their iOS device. Check it out today and let us know what you think. - The Bing Team Bing is breaking out of the search box. Stepping Out of the Search Box

Since the beginning of Bing, we’ve set out to do search differently. We felt that indexing information was important but we know magic doesn’t come from just giving a list of a zillion links. Magic comes from people being able to do things with the information they find and from empowering people to do what they need. Providing clarity and context for what matters. From searching for that perfect answer or mapping the quickest route to finding the latest release to watch on Xbox, Bing provides what you need in the way you need it. We’ve believed that since day one and we’ve been dedicated to making that magic every day. We wondered why we had to be so focused on typing into a search box as the only way to find answers. You don’t live in a box so why should you search in one? What if we brought information to you as you needed it? What if we integrated into the products that you use every day and even brought you results before you even thought about searching? What if we walked away from this old view of ‘searching’ and created the birth of ‘finding and doing’? We’ve embraced this mission of empowering people with knowledge... Help Your Britain - Brent Lodge Bird and...

Continuing with our Help Your Britain campaign, today marks the 13th user-nominated charity to be showcased on Bing. There are more than 187,000 registered charities across Great Britain with a story to be told, many of whom will never be heard due to the lack of resources at their disposal. We’re shining the spotlight on these unsung British heroes as part of our long-term campaign, enabling you, the British public, to nominate the charities you would like to see via www.bing.com/HelpYourBritain . Today is the turn of… Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital is based in Sidlesham in West Sussex, and this is where the dedicated team of experts treats more than 3,000 sick, orphaned and injured wildlife casualties every year. About 2,500 of these are birds with the rest being mainly hedgehogs, as well as a few deer and badgers as well as small mammals. Many of these patients are victims of interactions with the human population; this includes road accident casualties, poisoning, pollution or environmental damage as well as victims of deliberate cruelty.
