I get asked by developers a lot about how they can leverage the nifty drawing tools that are on Live Search Maps. Well, Johannes Kebeck (Virtual Earth, Technology Specialist) took it upon himself to write the code and document it for you. You can reference the code on the ViaVirtualEarth.com site here: http://www.viavirtualearth.com/Wiki/Drawing-Tool+for+VE+v5.ashx . CP

Homepages.com has launched their map based search using Virtual Earth. The solution leverages our local search API included within Virtual Earth to show home buyers not only where available properties are, but what local amenities are in the area. The best way to see the full value of Virtual Earth on Homepages.com is to do a search for a home based on a postal code. Once you get results, click the "Map These Properties" button to see them all on a map. The properties you searched for will appear on the map. You'll see a list of local search categories on the left which you can select one by one in order to view them on the map with respect to the properties you're interested in. Pretty slick...

John L. Scott does it again. JLS has rolled out their "neighborhood wizard" to help users more precisely locate a home on their consumer web site. JLS was the first to roll out a residential real estate site that featured auto-refreshing, draggable maps. Now you can still have that same functionality, but specify a polygonal shape on the map and only results based on your selected ammenity types will appear on the map. Since I'm in the market now, I found this extremely useful since I didn't want to live east of a particular road I was able to specify the area west of that road and no results appeared on the east side - simply fantastic! You can read about it in detail in the press release or...

Chapters Book Stores is leveraging Virtual Earth to help Harry Potter fans find their bookstores in order to get their hands on a copy of the final novel in the series. As a personal fan of both VE and HP, I'm excited for the final novel so any way to get it is a good one. You can check out the solution here: http://harrypotter.sympatico.msn.ca/StoreLocatorEvents/ . There are 3,500 prizes up for grabs worth over $250 000! Gamers answer trivia questions, with help from Live Search, to earn the chance to ‘dig’ for prizes on a map of Australia (it consists of a million pixels). Prizes have been randomly placed under certain pixels. The massive prize pool includes a Holden Captiva SUV worth $42,000, $25,000 cash, JVC TVs and...

Thanks to everyone who attended my Virtual Earth / Live.com Search speaking session and visited me at the Live.com booth @ Tech Ed this year. During my discussion I had promised I would post my app code for converting SOAP XML to JavaScript, so you'll find step-by-step instructions below. I had originally written this on the B2B blog and have since updated it for Version 5 of the API. Specifically, this application will show you how to use MapPoint Web Service's FindNearRoute() method to find the nearest locations with .1 miles of a route then display the results on a Virtual Earth map. Enjoy! An application hitting MapPoint Web Service (MWS) for algorithmic searching (in order to be presented...
