Customer Focused … Humble … Under Promise/Over Deliver …

These are some of the key cultural traits the Web Search team here at Microsoft tries to live by. Boy, were we surprised to wake up yesterday to a bunch of press saying things like “Microsoft: Give us Six Months to Beat Google” and “Microsoft: We’ll Beat Google at Its Own Game”. What’s up with those headlines? They were crafted from an interview with Neil Holloway; he clarifies his position on John Batelle’s SearchBlog. We on the Search Team also want to clarify our position:

We believe that search is in its infancy. We believe there is massive opportunity to improve every aspect of the search experience including: basic web relevancy, new types of media, refining and interacting with your results, leveraging search server infrastructure to provide new services that were never before imagined, and so much more. We are committed to building the world’s best search engine which helps you get your answers as quickly as possible – and we are excited to spend many years continuing to innovate on our customer’s behalf.

When you talk about basic web relevancy, our customers report that we’ve made some great progress over the past year, and I know that our research and engineering pipeline is overflowing with intriguing ideas that we will test and release as they’re ready. Certainly newer areas of search like desktop search and mapping are areas in which many reviewers and bloggers believe we have some best-in-class features. Next week Christopher Payne, VP of Search, will be in San Diego at ETech showing some intriguing improvements to our service, we hope these continue the trend.

That said, we won’t try to predict the progress of our competitors and so we won't forecast when we might take the lead, but this is a long term game and we are committed to helping drive the next wave of innovation in search for our customers.

C'mon, Ken, it just isn't true that you "won't forecast when we might take the lead."

In June 2005, Steve Ballmer was quoted as saying, "In the next six months, we'll catch Google in terms of relevancy."

http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/0,2000061733,39199269,00.htm

In November 2005, Bill Gates said, "Google is our main competitor, brilliant people work there, but Internet search engines are still in a terrible state compared to where they could be. This is a situation that we hope will change for the better in the next six months."

http://news.techwhack.com/2314/011106-bill-gates-say-microsoft-is-ready-to-take-on-google/

Also in November 2005, Bill Gates said, "Now, in a very short period of time, we will actually have more than matched the kind of relevance that Google can deliver."

Unless you are somehow excluding the heads of Microsoft when you say "we", it is absurd for you to claim that you have humbly not been making public predictions of when you will take the lead.

If you can't take the heat, then don't be in the game.

Search Engines Web

1- What is ReleRank and how will it be used

2- MSN has made an astounding leap in relevancy within the past year (EXCEPT FOR THE LAST FLEETING UPDATE)

However, it must be factored in that MSN was depending on Looksmart, Overture, Real Names for whatever relevancy it got - and Inktomi was totally neglected by its previous owners - but most MSN searchers never got to that point

There is only so far any one can go with the current ALGO technology - that point has just about been reached!!!

Every possible algo combination has been created and tested - what can MSN do that Google and Yahoo have NOT already considered ?

The entire SEARCH DNA has to be reborn from the bottom up

Concept Searching, LSI, grid Computing and ultra hi-tech hardware is the future!!

Kudos to you and Moss for the clarification. When I read the original press releases, I couldn't believe that anyone at MSFT would be that ignorant but I wasn't sure given past track record. I'm glad to see that infact no such statements appear to have been made and that more importantly, your group has internalized "underpromise and overdeliver". Right now, I think you folks are still behind YHOO far less GOOG. But I keep checking back and will happily switch to you if/when you provide a consistently better result.

Does ReleRank have anything to do with Claria's RelevancyRank technology?

Ken, maybe you should get this Neil Holloway guy to recommend your team for big raises. It sounds like he has some pull with your company and he's pretty impressed by what you've done so far (as he should be).

Once again, Microsoft just cannot avoid its own hype!
Ken Moss says "Customer Focused … Humble … Under Promise/Over Deliver". Then a few lines later he says "our customers report that we’ve made some great progress over the past year".
That's HYPE and RUBBISH!
Well, from everything I have seen about MS's web search, it is totally useless! Try looking for a support article in MS's knowledge base on its own website. Results - 1/10 if you are generous.
Improvement from before? Not in the 10 years I have been looking for info on MS's website!

Yahoo Ads not working either for me

FIRST I MOST SAY THAT I DON'T SPEEK OR WRITTE ENGLISH VERY GOOD.
OK SO LET'S START:

If Bill Gates gave me microsoft corporation FOR FREE the first thing i do will be closing msn search.

One year ago i have start using your search.
It did not beat google but i thought "It's Microsoft. It will get better". So I tell all my friends about MSN Search.
I make MSN Search as default web page on EVERY computer that i was using, I put msn on EVERY page i design...

Let Me tell You some thing now:
- I DON'T USE YOUR SEARCH ANY MORE BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT BE BETTER THEN GOOGLE IN 6 MONTHS, NOT IN 6 YEARS, NOT IN 1.000.000 YEARS.

YOU ARE AVREGE SEARCH THAT HAS 3. PLACE IN SEARCH ENGINES ONLY BECAUSE IT'S MICROSOFT.

ASK.COM IS BETTER THEN YOU. YOU HAVE MILIONS OF DOLARS AND YOU STILL CANT BEAT GOOGLE THAT STARTED FROM 2 PEOPLE FROM
GARAGE, G*A*R*A*G*E, G_A_R_A_G_E.

YOU ARE SHAME FOR MICROSOFT, INTERNET, AND WORLD.

I QUOTE "Microsoft is has only the best people in world".

WELL WHERE ARE THEY?
WHY "THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD" CAN'T BEAT GOOGLE?

WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MSN SEARCH? DO YOU MAKE SEARCH ENGINE OR DO YOU EAT AND SLEEP?

-------------------------------------------------------

If you don't start 2 make something from your search it's not going to B GOOD.
Google has 1.000 of feautres. That number of feautres grows every day.

What about your feautres? They are growing once at year.

I DON'T HATE YOU. I AM JOUST SAYING THAT YOU SHOULD MAKE THINGS BETTER.

GOOD LUCK

One of the things that you can do to achieve your goals, is start allowing access to an open API to advanced SEM companies, so that we can distribute some of our client spend with you. Top SEM's are too busy to have people dedicated just to AdCenter and giving us access to the API will allow us to spend millions of dollars a year. We are struggling to get API access, which Google & Yahoo provide very easily.

I have "won" on this game! Yeah, I won a 500 dollar AMEX card and an mp3 player. Within about 2 hours of each other. Only problem is, you see, I didn't win because the acceptance form timed out on me and would not accept my submission. So, after playing for awhile longer, I "won" another 500 dollar AMEX card (there are only 4 for the entire month so boy am I lucky or what?) and this time it told me that I had already won this prize so keep trying for a different prize. Hmm. No confirmation email as yet and I am NOT holding my breath. I have all my screenshots and everything. But if anyone at Microsoft is interested, this thing has been playing like a loose slot machine, but will NOT pay off. I think this beyond blows. One lady I know whose son has autism was thrilled to "win" the 50 thousand bucks for charity. Heh. It is like the third they have said won this month already. IF ANYONE CARES, THIS GAME IS SO BAD AND IS CRUSHING SOME PEOPLE'S HOPES! Not exactly what one looks for in a search engine.

Let see, on 2-28 I won the Plasma. On 3-5 I won a $500 Amer Exp and THREE times I won $500 Nordstroms gift cards. They ALL timed out. So I never won any of them even though my information was entered and sent immediately. Is MSN really giving away these prizes or is this search and win a joke?
