Using images to find other images

December 01, 2008, 09:17 AM by Bing | 14 Comments

With features like continuous scroll and an index that encompasses millions of websites, a single image search query is often all you need to find what you are looking for. But sometimes those initial results only give you a hint of what’s available and you need to refine your search to uncover the images you want. With Live Search, you can now use images, rather than additional keyword queries, to refine a search and discover more content.

For example, if you searched for images of boxing icon Muhammad Ali, you would get initial results that include everything from portraits to action shots of both a young and old Ali:

But say that you’d like to see more images of Ali’s famous defeat of Sonny Liston. When you hover over that photo in the results, you’ll see an option to Show Similar Images

Images2

If you click on Show Similar Images, you'll get a new set of results focused solely on the iconic image from 1964 in which Ali towers over an unconscious Liston, after a quick right cross to the jaw.

Now, a question for sports history buffs: are the above images from Ali’s first fight with Liston in Miami, Fla., or their second battle in Lewiston, Maine? To find out, try Live Image Search.

Great! I've always thought searching for images using text is a little awkward. The next step? Let us upload an image to use as a query.

This is awesome!  Could you take it a step further and apply this to regular web searches?  (And my original suggestions from waaaayyy back still stands:  comprehensive audio search.

* Fixed *  I don't know why there are 2 half posts above

I just did a blog post about this, cool function. One BIG problem; I don't have your image search URL memorized and this blog post doesn't provide a link to it so I was unable to send my readers to your search site

Has this feature been rolled out globally? Or is it still in the testing phase available to a few countries?

Brilliant! Love this feature! Now if only I could collapse the Scratch Pad if I feel like it, have more tools to filter photos, then Image Search would be the best!

This is a really cool and useful feature.  Indexing every image on the internet by its content is an unthinkable task.  Kudo to LiveSearch team!

Accidentally, I did something similar for my AppDay (toy) project.   You can check mine out here \\satab2\public\appday\ (MS internal only)

I love this idea, and would love to upload an image and find other images like it, but I can't for the life of me find a link that will do what this post is all about!

Even the commenter who said "this blog post doesn't provide a link to it" doesn't provide a link that will do this. What am I missing? Where can I upload an image and find more like it?
