I have seen different recommendations for this...Is it better from and SEO perspective to create your blog on the domain of the site you are trying to promote (with the aim of lots of regularly updated content, and possibility of other people linking to you)

Or is better to create a blog on a totally different domain (maybe even free wordpress or blogger blogs) write relevent posts and include optmiised links back to the domain I want to promote?

Your recommendations please...

The separation is not as important as some seem to imply. Essentially a separate domain or subdomain gives your blog slightly more "power" as a standalone site. It's a lot easier to get external links to blog.example.com than to www.example.com/blog/, for instance. You also have a greater chance of multiple listings within a single set of search results.

But it really comes down to how many links your blog obtains, and how it passes that benefit back to your other site. A new URL is a new URL, whether or not it lives on its own domain or subdomain. It has nothing until it starts acquiring links.

Personally I tend to use a subdomain - this gives greater flexibility from a technical standpoint and keeps things tied to one domain name.

I do the free wordpress and link it back to the site. My blog now has a pagerank of 4 and comes up on google a lot, sending traffic to my site.  Wordpress is the best for SEO.

It is better to create your blog on the domain of the site( i.e. is called sub domain) then u will got lot of internal links so choose sub domain for your site.

Each one has its pros and cons. In some of my sites I created blogs within the domains. And I registered a separate domain name just for blogging, and link to my sites from there.

from my perspective, I would not use either of the two above methods.

1. sub-domains are treated like separate domains. You will have to work twice as hard if your goal is to surface your main website in search results.

2. using free hosted sites gives you absolutely no control over your blog's future. If they (the hosting site) decide to institute new business rules that aren't in your favor, you do not even have a way to 301 all of your hard-won link juice.

I would set it up under a directory. domain.com/blog/etc. is a great example of good information architecture and all links you receive to your blog will count towards your overall domain rank.

Best is to use wordpress as a blog to get an easy indexing and fast crawling from search engines like Bing. You can have it  it on the website. But the only thing is that your website should be useful and effective.

Whether you like a sub-domain or an entirely different domain for blogging, it boils down to personal preferences.
