This problem seems to be still going on after 3 weeks (your initial post).  We are investing a lot of time and resources in SEO and can't read results with all these falso positives in our view.  When will fix be in place?

Unfortunately, the problem is back in another shape!

I have almost the same number of fake referrer hits from bing but in a different shape: no referrer. So, the stats show me the pages visited, no referrer and the IPs (microsoft's) are like:

I seem not to have notice any fake referrer in my logs, even though a couple of other people have.

I'd like any traffic at this stage.  My UK site is targeting Tuvalu at the moment on Bing! 

Thats because its a spammers bot . Spammers  found a way t o use it like Google's to redirect your pages . Heres an article

so many articles and as you can see, it's  been going on since 2005 . The only way to stop them is to stop search engines and go back to the old fashion way and trade links. Which is a pain, because these spammers know that people depend on the search engines which they have basically taken over  and  search engines don't really  care ,because they make money off ads and such , so no loss to them only the poor saps  who work their fingers off  with their sites to have them destroyed.

Every link to my site on bing is directed to a spammers  haven, with nothing but my name in it.  I have blocked bling. Only  real decent search engine now is yahoo. . and that's not saying much.

That only makes sense if your site is allowing spammers to put their spam, or redirects to their spam, on your pages for the search engines to direct people to. That isn't the search engine's problem, that's your lack of security.

In any case, such a redirect would not show up in your logs as coming from an msnbot ip address, which is what is being discussed in this thread.

I'm now seeing a number of hits from msnbot IP addresses that do not have any referer at all and do not specify an msnbot user agent. Here is a typical log entry, with my domain name obfuscated

msnbot-65-55-109-237.search.msn.com www.example.com - [18/Sep/2009:23:49:50 -0700] "GET /smf/index.php?topic=18375.msg126949 HTTP/1.1" 200 6671 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;  MSIE 6.0;  Windows NT 5.2;  SV1;  .NET CLR 1.1.4322;  .NET CLR 2.0.40607;  .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648)"

That should be enough for the Bing team to identify what it actually was. I got about 80 of these yesterday, not a tremendous amount, but it does make me curious why the msnbot ip addresses are browsing without identifying themselves as msnbot agents.
