It's official! We're releasing an update to the desktop products MapPoint 2009 (Desktop Business Intelligence Mapping and Analysis Tool) and Streets & Trips 2009 (Desktop Consumer Trip Planning). Contrary to the release of MapPoint 2006, there are quite a few more features and a whole new interface. MapPoint 2009 will be available September 1, 2008. Streets & Trips will be available in early October at your favorite retailer. For those who don't know, Streets & Trips has a subset of MapPoint functionality, but if you just want offline trip planning software S&T is the way to go. And, for the Aussies, no, there is still no Australian version - just North America and Europe. I know, I know.

MapPoint 2009 has a lot of upside with the software part of Microsoft's software plus services strategy, but it remains upside. Can someone build me a Virtual Earth com add in please? If not, I'll do it myself. I mean really, how hard would it be?

And, you gotta love The Matrix Map (read as Night Time Map).

  • PLEASE DO A MAPPOINT FOR INDIA. MS HAS INVESTED SO MUCH IN INDIA, CAN'T MS DO IT WORKING TOGETHER WITH THEIR INDIA DEVELOPMENT CENTER? YOU NEED NOT UPDATE IT EVERY YEAR OR EVERY 3 YEARS. WE NEED A DESKTOP MAPPING SOFTWARE FOR INDIA.

  • Someone,

Good request, but who's definition of India's borders should we use?

  • hmm, well I think Australia would be the next logical target. However, not having 10 years of product marketing (like with the NA and EU versions), I doubt it would ever make business sense to do an AUS / Asian version of MapPoint desktop, better to focus on VE.

  • I think there's a good argument there. Australia's had solid, public map data for a lot longer than India. Plus, it's pretty clear what the country boundaries are. :) Don't be surprised to see our Virtual Earth investments be taken advantage of in a future version of MapPoint. I'm not revealing anything, but doesn't it make sense?

  • If you're excited about the release of MapPoint 2009 today should be a bit more exciting for you because

  • When will MapPoint 2009 be included in the MSDN downloads?  What level of MSDN subscription is required?

  • Can MapPoint be linked to outlook calendars to display events or appointments?

  • @gregory.browning3 - technically, yes. There's an MapPoint addin for Office that you can optionally install that will add some mapping capabilities. There is Bing Maps integration with Outlook 2010 natively. Get the beta!
