Update on Tabs

We would like to thank everyone for giving our tabbed browsing implementation a try and submitting your feedback. We are actively listening and working on improving the feature!

Our goal in delivering this feature was to give IE users a tabbed browsing solution to enhance overall online search and browse experiences prior to the official release of IE7 without them having to install a completely new browser.

Many of you have reported a flicker when you switch tabs. We understand that this is bothersome and are actively working on improvements to reduce the tab flicker. There have also been reports of issues associated with tabs and using F11 in IE to get to full screen mode.  We are also looking into a fix for this.

Our current MSN implementation does have some limitations as a browser add-in that we have had to work within. For example, in order to not override existing IE shortcuts, we picked shortcut keys different from other non-Microsoft tab-enabled browsers.  For a complete list of keyboard shortcuts check out our Tabbed Browsing Help page.

Despite these constraints, we’ve built in a couple neat features that we believe you’ll find useful and convenient!

1) If you go into MSN Toolbar Options and select Tabbed Browsing, you can select to always have MSN Search result links open in background tabs. By doing so, the QuickTabs button is automatically enabled every time you’re on a MSN search results page.

2) When adding a new tab, you can have the default page as MSN Search or your IE home page.  If you set it to MSN Search, every time you want to launch a search, you can just click on the new tab button.

3) You can restore your last viewed tabs from the last IE session by selecting the “Open Last Viewed Tabs” option off the My Tabs icon.  This is great if you happen to close a set of tabs and want to get back to them.

In summary, we’re tracking your feedback closely and hope to have an improved version available very soon!

  • Denise Ho, a Microsoft product manager working on the MSN Search Toolbar, has this update on tabs: Our goal in delivering this feature was to give IE users a tabbed browsing solution to enhance overall online search and browse experiences prior to the official release of IE7 without them having...
  • Something I LOVE to experience in tabbed browsing - double-clicking a tab closes it and double-clicking the tab bar in empty place opens a new tab (blank, homepage or search or whatever). It is a must-have feature of IE7 or else! ;)
  • Warn the user when closing IE if more that 1 tab is opened. I have lost links because I opened in a background tab and closed the IE, tring to go to the background IE that wasn't there.
  • I'd like to see an "Open link in new tab" option when I right click. I'm not sure if it's asking too much.
  • Hi Denise,

We really need a 64bit version. MSN Toolbar is not runing with XP x64 Edition. I can understand that with the google bar, or Yahoo bar but not from MSN. If Corp wants to promote x64, it has to happen from all side. A new version with only 32bit support is not a good sign....

    Thank you
  • I would like to have the option of having the tabs at the bottom and able to drag them to the left or right. I would like them to be customizable. I know this is an early version.
  • I admit that I have not downloaded the toolbar yet but I saw that it is a whopping 7.88 MB download. I'm curious as to what it does better than Avant browser (@ 1.33 MB)?
    Anything?
  • words cannot adequately describe the surpassing suckitude of your tabbed browsing implementation. i hope whoever owns this feature is pleased with their 3.0
  • shortcut is good , but the good solution it's to move from a tab to an other with our intellimouse but CTRL+TAB couldn't be defined in intllipoint ... so bad
  • Ok, I finally have it so that when I search it goes to the google search results page. I used this:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=$w

Now I have this problem. When I try to search with quotation marks and plus signs and commas though, it doesn't work right. For example, when I try searching for:

    "Red Tide"

this is what the search results page says I searched for:

    %22 Red+Tide%22

    If I search for:

    Red+Tide

    or

    Red + Tide

respectively, the search results page shows that I searched for these:

    Red%2BTide

    Red+%2B+Tide
  • Why do I need to see the MSN search pane when I just want tabbed browsing. I use and love Google Toolbar, I don't need another search bar to take up screen real estate.

    Just the Tabs, Ma'am!
  • No Windows x64 support, still?

With the previous MSN desktop search it was possible to force an install on x64 (with limited functionality). How can I force an install the same way with 2.0?

    Thanks for any info
