What’s new with Windows Live Search?

  • Comments (14)
We’ve  launched new features designed to put the user in control, while making search tasks easier and more natural Live Search. There are a host of subtle changes that we hope just make the experience a bit more pleasant, like better description text and improved typography to make quickly scanning results easier. We’ve also tidied up the look of the page from the last version because, well, we look at this page every day, too.

Here’s some of the new functionality that we hope makes working with results easier:

The scope bar that appears after you query provides a natural way to refine the type of information you want about the topic you’ve entered. The level of detail slider is a first step to letting you determine how much information to show on the page. You’ll find, if you slide the peg all the way to the right, the ability to search within a site. With a click, you can do a quick search for something more specific within a given site. Smart Scrolling  takes advantage of Ajax to move results fluidly within the page; no more reloading an entire page to get to the next 10 results.  We’ve also built an on-the-fly feed reader (in Feeds, click the preview icon next to the feed title) that you can use to preview feeds before subscribing to them (one click adds them to your live.com homepage).

We know that this is just a start and we look forward to improving the search experience based on what our users need to quickly and easily find the answers they are looking for.

  • The light shade of blue makes the results text harder to absorb visually.

Not at all impressed with the scroller. When I move/drag the scroller to the top .. why doesn't it stay there? Second, the retrival of results should happen in much larger chunks or groups .. right now scrolling happens too slow/lagged .. just scrolling one item down takes a noticeable half second. Even scrolling backwards has this lag (shouldnt previously gotten results be in cache already?) Also scrolling with the mouse wheel has a wheel of fortune type effect where the text continues scrolling after I stopped.

I think scrolling (at least +/- 50 results) within the results box should be as responsive and smooth as scrolling on a webpage.

I want to be able to press page down in the results (screenful should apear faster though).

Also, cant the "give us feedback" and copyright stuff go somewhere else .. or at least reduce in font size? The more results shown teh better ..especially since you guys favor lagged scrolling.

I like how the image search results show up and work. But would be nice if the URL was displayed under the thumbnail of the pic in case some are from sites i recognize versus some guy's homepage etc.

Anyway good job etc. Don't mean to come off as negative. I like the way the image search results come up and when an image is select the  results are off in a column. Why not do that with the text search results? When a user selects a search result ..put the text results in squares on the side column and move the ads  to a top horizontal rectangle and have the webpage appear in the center otherwise the webpage may be too small. Of course this should happen only if a user selects it by not right clicking it so the new page appears in a new window by itself if they choose.
  • The idea of  continuously Scrolling SERPs is overall good and unique.....

Keeping the sponsor links, Obviously, on the right side without interferring with the organics SERPs is good...

However, those internal SERPs scrollbars seem to be somewhat harder to manipulate than the regular browser scrollbars.

Yahoo's Mindset experiment would be absolutely PERFECT for this - an lever that goes form shopping to informational SERPs...

MSN's SERPs are quite relevant - considering the Search Engine is about one years old

Not as relevant as Google - but slightly above Yahoo and Ask on  many queries
  • don't feel this scrolling useful. it only makes SERP confusing.
  • Really impressive! love the way of scrolling so much. just looking for how to do windows live searches from my Windows Desktop Search.
  • I only get a script error

Web.Runtime.init is not an object and then the page shows a small dotted circle and says loading.
Nothing happens after that. The page just goes dead.
