New and improved product results in Web search

New and improved product results in Web search

  • Comments (13)

It’s no surprise to anyone who uses the Web that shopping is one of the leading online activities.  Many people use the Internet to research their next purchase or buy products online.   We’re here to help you find the product information you care about and make informed decisions. We’ve recently launched a richer experience when searching for products—from broad categories such as digital cameras to specific products such as Nikon d40.

Product Category Searches
For category searches we now show you popular products within that category.  The average rating and sales price are shown below the product image with an option to browse more products on MSN Shopping.  You can also research products you are interested in by reading the collection of user reviews and viewing a summary of the overall opinion that users have about that product.  We’ve indexed millions of products and user reviews through a combination of crawling Web sites and obtaining feeds from partner sites.

Computers and electronics are the most popular categories for product research online and this is where we put a lot of focus for this release.  But—because we know people look for other products (like Gucci bags) and not just Lcd tvs or Mp3 players—we will continue to increase our selection and depth for more categories in the future.

Searches to try: Digital cameras, Camcorders, Nikon digital cameras, Wireless headphones, Bulova watches, Gucci bags, Motorola cell phones

Specific Product Searches
Searches for specific products—such as Nikon d40—now show a quick summary of the product, including a graphical summary of user opinions (called “User reviews at a glance”).  Keep an eye out for a more detailed post on this brand new feature soon.

The team is continuously working on ensuring that product name variations trigger the relevant product results.  For example, as of this posting “Canon Rebel XT” doesn’t trigger a product, but Canon Rebel XTi does.

Searches to try: Nikon d40, Canon Rebel xti, Microsoft Zune, Palm Treo 650, Sony Ericsson k750i, Canon eos 5d, AT&T 8525, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T100

Clicking on a product with ratings takes you to a detailed product summary page.  This page enables you to visually explore user opinions on various aspects of the product (quality, ease of use, etc) and filter them by both positive and negative opinions.

We look forward to your feedback to help us improve product results within Live Search.  We hope you enjoy using the new features we’ve recently rolled out!

  • Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the web....

  • That improvement IS useful! It is so hard to find unbiased product reviews... It will sure help many people find what they want. Congrats!

  • Has this feature been disabled? I tried the searches above and they don't seem to return the products

  • Good to hear that MSN works on the search engine

  • Good to hear it. We used to use Google, and now we can think once again, thank you. Keep working!!

  • Msn has improved a lot not in terms of Search results but also in crawling webites, lot new features added.

    All the best to you..

  • I have always found my site on MSN until live has been launched.

We have never used any black hat or spam techniques, I am a member of some of the most authorative SEO web forums and many members websites such as mine have been completely dropped from MSN's search listings.

I appreciate that relevance is everything with search results, we are the largest seller of DVD CASES in the UK and stock the widest range available on the web, so we are relevant - and we rank No.1 on Google for this keyword for the last 2 years.

However cannot see any reason why we would have been dropped - the only possible I suppose might be that we are a UK company but a .COM domain and perhaps the new search doesn't like that.

Anyway I and many members of the forum at -

would like to understand why legitimate websites have been penalised by this new search and not just penalised but erased from history, after all my site has been around for over 7 years.

  • How can you have the GALL to claim "new and improved" when you (MSN) are deleting RELEVANT USEFUL WHITEHAT pages at a rate as alarming as google??  You people are going backwards instead of forward.  It's been one algo disaster after another with this "Live Search" crap.  Go back to your drawing board of MSN search, back when you INDEXED webpages.

If you want to do something USEFUL for your USERS, then how 'bout GIVING them RESULTS and not just results from the big name monopolies that have HIGHER prices and WORSE support????  You totally defy logic.  I'm total agreement with "DVD and Media" above.

  • What I am waiting for is "community based" or "smart" results....you know my age range and demographic, career, location...so when *I* search for watches, I would love to see results that are relevent to *me*....same thing with ads-if I can assert preferences/"recommend" ads to "myself" that I like and dislike, then I'm sure eventually instead of ads that have to do with search terms, it'll have to do with *me* as well as what I'm looking for at the moment.
