They say all good things must come to an end. For The Stefan, good things include new laptops, fresh coffee in the morning, and dewy-eyed, innocent minions who do my wacky bidding because they believe it will make them captains of social media.
It is outrageous yet it is true - TI (“The Intern”) and TOI (“The Other Intern”)- are going back to school to get their degrees. I tried to explain to them that no one needs a degree when they can learn in the School of Twitter and the University of Youtube. They can learn more from watching my videos with dark backgrounds and soft lighting, translating newspaper articles about my heralded speaking tours in Germany, and photographing the documentary drama that is @bingtroll than they ever could in those ivy-covered halls. Why go to business schools to learn how to be the face of the company when you can learn from the face of Bing?
Yes, I know their evil plan: to get their degrees so they can come back to be my boss. It will take two of them to try and take my job, just as it took more than one of them to hand out Bing t-shirts in bars, schmooze social media stars, and sing jingles. Yes, it took entirely both of them to create a contest that in turn created that overnight sensation of melody, “Bing Goes the Internet” that brought said Internet to its knees (and MG Siegler to a new place entirely). Just search for “Bing goes the Internet” on twitter…the tweets have still not died down.
Perhaps it is best that they go on to “higher learning” before my boss realizes the interns actually created that contest…
Oh, sure we’ll miss them. The boundless youthful energy. The MC Hammer mashups in their cubes. Their polite withholding of comment about the clothes I wear to the office. One can get almost fond of the pitter patter of their high-tech sneakers and the plaintive whining about needing to borrow my FlipCam. But let’s face it; the endless sense of loss is completely offset by the fact I’ve got at least one more year before they hunt me down when they realize getting me a latte every morning did not increase their social media mojo.
Interns (Kellye and Jeff): best of luck. We already miss you. Keep sending us Youtube videos and don’t forget: the Bing Jingle will never die. Not until you come back next year and do another one.
Stefan Weitz, Director
(and of course the rest of his Bing minions)
Thank you Stefan (and his "minions"!) I've had an amazing summer, and it would not have been the same without you. Let me know if you have any more preview codes to hand out...
Kellye and Jeff -
Have a great summer - we will look forward to the next phase of your viral video fame with your new flipcams. Best of luck!
Lynn (TheManager)
Kellye -
Thanks so much for all your hardwork this past summer. You really jumped in on day one and hit the ground running. Nothing like starting on the day Bing launches! Hope you learned a ton!
Keep in touch,
Michele (TheVendor)
Stefan: did you tell your interns that your nickname is Tommy Bahama?
Seriously, they got a great opportunity working for you and did some awesome work. God knows that friggin' Bing Jingle will be stuck in my head for months to come.
-Mark, a Bing PM
Thanks!!
I agree, no one needs a degree when they can learn in the School of Twitter and the University of Youtube.
