Summer travel forecast: Part one by Fareologist

Summer travel forecast: Part one by Fareologist

It’s been two months since our original Summer Travel Forecast, which means that now’s a good time to revisit it. In this first post, we’ll look at domestic airfare.

When I first examined summer fares for domestic travel, they were down 9% from 2008. Since then, the gap has widened further; currently, summer fares are 20% below where they were last year at this time. That doesn’t mean, though, that prices have dropped more; instead, they’ve crept up much more slowly than they did in 2008. The graph below shows how summer airfares have changed throughout the spring in both years.

Of course, a lot of the increase that you do see is only for the June flights that are close to departure. Flights in July and August are still very cheap (and September fares are even cheaper!):

Also, as I never get tired of saying, the flexible traveler always wins.

I also looked at the average fare for week-long domestic trips in July and August, based on the day of departure. The chart below shows that on average, a Sunday-to-Sunday ticket costs $50 more than a Tuesday-to-Tuesday ticket. If you’re flexible enough to fly midweek, you can really save big.

“All these general tips are great,” you may be thinking, “but where should I go?”

Here are some suggestions:

  • Hawaii is really cheap right now! For travel in July, fares into Honolulu are down 29%. Fares into Lihue, Kauai, are down 34%. And fares into Kona and Maui are down 36% from last year. Look for the best deals using our Flexible Travel tools (like Seattle to Maui non-stop for $344 round-trip).
  • Take a bite out of the Big Apple! Airfares into New York City in July and August are down 25% from last year, and rates for premium hotels are down 33%.
  • You can also use Bing Travel’s deals pages to find your own savings. But if you’re planning a late summer trip, be sure to book soon before airfare prices increase.

In my next post, I’ll describe what I’m seeing for trips to Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean.

As always, if you have any questions or find any great deals, leave me a comment on the blog or send me a tweet (@fareologist).

  • I will be in Honolulu at the end of July.  Don't want to use Priceline this time because I must have a room that can sleep 4 people.  I reeeallllly want to stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, or the Sheraton Waikiki.  I've tried calling the hotels directly and am getting the same rates advertised on their websites.  Can you suggest a way to save $ on a room at one of these properties?  I'm not getting much luck with the few promo codes I've found.

  • i like travels on mountain and river
