It's always better for me when I leave heavy personal items at home and travel with just a few needed and lighter belongings.
Always buy travel sized items to take with you such as toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, antibacterial gel/cloths and facial cloth cleansers; you can find these at your local walmarts and targets. Sunscreen I buy at the place because my favorite brand has not been available in the US for the past 20 years. I never take hairdryers or anything heavy with me.
I think to know the travel destination is the first step. Know the weather of the destination, if it's too hot avoid worm cloths which is too heavy. Minimize those thing which you can get in your destination place like food, tent, etc.
I always find I end up wearing my same comfortable clothes over and over, just layer light disposable tshirts or tanks under them...just wash out in sink or do a light load of laundry. We take old clothes or clothes we are not really fond of, tshirts, underclothes etc...for additional layering and throw them away during or at end of trip. Don't forget, most of us buy tshirts, polos etc...as souveniers to take home that can be worn during your trip.
when i pack to go on holiday i usually include loads of uneeded items and when i get to the hotel theres no room for anything.
