The world's weirdest hotels

When it’s time to choose a place to stay for your next vacation, you need to consider all your options. Do you want to stay in a motel, a B&B or a 4-star hotel? And if you’re a wine-lover, do you want to stay at a winery or even in a wine cask? No fooling: A Swiss hotel has created rooms out of enormous wooden casks previously used for storing wine. That’s just one of the world's weirdest hotels featured in a new Bing Travel photo gallery from Budget Travel.

These unusual hotels are probably like no place you’ve ever stayed before. “Sleeping with the fishes” takes on a whole new meaning at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Fla. This property is located 21 feet underwater in an old marine lab. Guests must scuba-dive to reach their room, but once inside, the accommodations are nice and dry and offer great views of the sea life swimming around you. Meanwhile, in the Costa Rican jungle, a Boeing 727 airplane has been converted into a two-bedroom suite. These beds are likely much more comfortable than the seats that used to occupy the airplane’s cabin.

What’s the weirdest hotel room you’ve stayed in during your travels? And would you make a special trip just to stay in one of these properties? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments section.

  • I've stayed in a hotel in California, which had different themes for different rooms...we picked up the library theme & had the bed & all furniture made of books...it was an amazing experience

  • Stayed in the Botel" at Pickwick lake in Tenn. just below the dam. It is a barge that washed up on shore during a flood years ago and has been converted into a hotel/restaurant. Very unusual.

  • i tayed in a hotel in Mira FLoree, Lima, Peru. At 1:30 am i heard the door being opened and other guests were being led in with cots to sleep on. theyhad over booked the hotel so they decided to just start doubling up. although the coule from turkey were nice i still was a bit put out by the experience i should have payed the extra $30 for the Marriot.

  • I stayed at a place in St. Maarten where you walked through a tunnel into a room where live trees were inside and you climbed the trees to different rooms. Really bizarre!

  • I stayed in a hotel in California too, The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.  The hotel is built mostly of blasted rock salvaged from the construction of the nearby interstate. The best rooms are the rock rooms which are on the ground floor, and have floor, walls, and ceiling made of rock. We stayed in the Bridalveil falls room which had a waterfall in the bathroom for a shower. The most popular room is the Caveman room.

I bet this is the same place Chaitali stayed.  This was 20 years ago, does anyone know if it is still there?

  • The best hotel I stayed in was in the gaslamp district in San Diego. The decor was from the 1920's and it was haunted by ghosts.

  • The ice hotel in Sweden. Each room has funky ice sculptures and you sleep on reindeer hides and there are no doors, but reindeer hides for privacy over the entry. You can't be in your room during the day, because tourists come to see them. Should you have to go to the bathroom at night, you must leave the building and you hope you find your room when you return because there are no doors, and no lights, and everyone sleeps in identical sleeping bags. Finally, before you go to bed, they give you a lesson on how to properly breath in a sleeping bag, as to not accidentally freeze to death at night.HHmm , I paid money for this.

  • My best hotel is my basment. it has a pool table air hokey and a pool out side.        (>^-^<) hum hahahahaaaaa

  • In California, Dunsmuir, stayed at the caboose motel.

Every room is a converted train caboose. Really cool and great views as it is at the base of Castle Crags.

  • The Madonna Inn in Ca. of the Caveman room and others is still there, and your right it's weird.

  • One of the most fun and funniest hotels I stayed in was a little dive of a hotel in Tappahanock.  It had "dollar" in its name, which we knew meant it wasn't the best, but we just needed a place to stay overnight.

The furniture was particle board, and it looked like someone had taken an axe and hit all the furniture because big pieces of "wood" - particle board were missing. We laughed until we cried and commented that we really needed to do the same thing to our furniture (we own a lodge).

It was  a memorable stay !

By the way, our blog is www.skychalet.blogspot.com and website is http://www.skychalet.com.

If you stay at our lodge, I guarantee you'd be writing on this blog that our lodge - Sky Chalet - has the best mountain views you've ever seen. Located in Basye, VA.

  • weirdest motel ive ever seen... motel 6.. best veiw of a neon 6 ive ever seen, classic, they also left the lights on for ya, very  cool..

  • This summer I stayed at the CitizenM Hotel in Amsterdam. Really cool. The shower is in the middle of the room inside a glass cylinder. The room is small but very unusual. The king bed is super comfy and there is a remote control to change the color of the lighting, the blinds and the entertainment system...
