Exactly 50 years ago, on Aug. 21, 1959, President Eisenhower put pen to paper and officially turned the islands of Hawaii into the 50th U.S. state. In commemoration of the Aloha State’s first half-century of statehood, a new Bing Travel slide show presents some of the most iconic sights associated with Hawaii. We’ve gathered photos of scenic locations such as Waikiki Beach, Kauai’s Na Pali Coast and the Big Island’s lava-launching volcanoes, as well as cultural mainstays such as hula, luaus and surfing.
If you’re not in Hawaii on the anniversary itself, it’s certainly not too late to get into the act, as Hawaii is celebrating its statehood throughout 2009. You can read more about the anniversary on the state government’s official 50th-anniversary site, as well as in a special statehood section published online by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.
Needless to say, though, the Hawaiian islands are a perfect place to visit any year, or any time of the year. The tropical climate is generally pleasant and mild year-round; the scenery is uniformly stunning; and there’s never any shortage of exciting activities or opportunities to laze around on the beach of your choice.
What are your favorite things to see and do in the Aloha State? For me, nothing compares to learning about Native Hawaiian cultural traditions from those who practice them, such as at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu, but losing myself in the greenery of the islands’ abundant parks and rainforests is a close second.

Hawaii became a state in the USA primarily because of its strategic location during World War 2. I'm happy for them as they celebrate the anniversary of their statehood.

My favorite Hawaiian destinations are the ones that take me off-the-beaten-path. Moving beyond the resorts, which are certainly beautiful and fun, introduces visitors to the history and culture of the Hawaiian Islands, providing a more meaningful visit. It also teaches why many native Hawaiians are not celebrating on statehood day. Take a day off from the beach and mai tai's to go exploring.
