You might not be thinking about your holiday travel plans just yet, but here at Bing Travel we’re always looking ahead. And today we’ve published our first take on the 2009 holiday travel season.
At this point, holiday travel is looking markedly more affordable than last year. Domestic Thanksgiving fares are down 22% from 2008, and are pretty much in line with 2007 fares. And domestic Christmas fares are currently down 17% from last year, although they’re still 8% above prices from the year before.
Holiday airfares typically increase as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach. Last year, however, we saw unusual price trends, with airfares for both holidays starting off high, declining as the season approached, and bottoming out only in early November. So far this year, prices are behaving more traditionally and are trending slowly upward.
As in previous years, you can save money by avoiding the most popular travel dates. As one example, domestic Thanksgiving fares for departure on Wednesday and return on Sunday are currently averaging $375. However, return on Monday instead and you’ll save an average of $35 per ticket.
In the past, we’ve often seen price drops throughout the fall that you can take advantage of if you’re flexible on your travel dates. But if you have specific dates you need to stick to, then you’re better off setting up Fare Alerts and watching prices like a hawk.

You are not liven on the same plant as me, got a mini vacation through vacationpackagestogo and did not have to pay for my room as i did a tour of there resort, but beyond that it cost me more this year than any other vacation in the past. Less people are going on vacation so the restaurants, movies and every other thing you can imagine including fuel is going up to make up for lost revenues.

HELP! We are trying to get to Mexico in October and have already rented a house. Well, we keep waiting for airfare to go DOWN and it keeps going UP! Now it's over $400. We are trying to get from Kansas City to Puerto Vallarta. Of course, our market is too small for Bing to forecast, but I'd like to know what the prediction is overall for airfares this fall.
Or, does anyone have any ideas of where/when to get good deals on Mexico airfares?
I always enjoy reading tips over here. And this holiday forecast seems to be closer to what I've imagined.
