Do you travel like a tourist or a local?

What’s your travel style?

When you’re on vacation, do you like to whiz through your destination like a tourist might, visiting all the popular landmarks? Or do you prefer to see it from a local’s perspective, dropping by the hangouts frequented by those who actually live there? Or maybe you try a combination of the two — seeing the more touristy spots on your first visit, and going the “when in Rome” route on later trips.

A new Bing Travel slide show presents our recommendations for touristy or local-style travel in eight great cities. Want to hit the must-see tourist attractions? Head to the Louvre in Paris, Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles or Ocean Drive in Miami. If you’d like to meet some locals, try the Musée Marmottan-Claude Monet in Paris, the Los Angeles Farmers Market or Miami’s Little Havana district.

Neither travel style is intrinsically better, of course. After all, tourist traps often have a good reason for being popular (exhibit A: the Mona Lisa and the rest of the Louvre’s matchless collection), while no one can show you a city’s hidden gems like a local.

Which style do you prefer? Share your thoughts and recommendations with other travelers in the comments section.

  • new bing style travel is the best in local traveling, keep it up GOD BLESS U ALL

  • I do both, I like to aimlessly rome the streets until I fall into something interesting. Then sometimes I like to see the tourists spots. I usually don't take maps when I'm out because that gives you any as a tourist I study the maps before hand or in hotel or my home away from home.

  • Like Dominique, I like to do both too. I want to see some of the tourist hotspots. But I always make sure I have one or two days to just wander off and see the city without having to focus on a map. Talk to locals and get tips on where they eat out etc. So, I would go for the combination of the two :)

  • Tourist style is better

  • I travel like both, it has a more to do with how you decide to enjoy the journey. For many that journey is the adventure of being in a place unknown, and being unknown amongst the locals. As a Tourist we know nothing, and in every respect seek to understand. This understanding is sparked by new friends and new cultures, and traditions. We leave as locals, feeling welcome to come back to visit a place known only for a momment in time as home.

  • BEING HALF ENGLISH & HALF KIDMIT, I TRY TO BLEND IN BUT IT CAN BE TRYING AT TIMES. I TRY TO DRESS LIKE THE LOCALS: BERET & SCARF IN FRANCE & LEATHERS IN GERMANY.

I'VE DIED MY HAIR, YET PEOPLE

    STILL SEE ME AS KIDMIT.

  • I enjoy laying on the beach all day and getting a tan.

  • Travelling both as a tourist and as a local. Sometimes it depends on the place. I mostly however travel as a local. Cant wait jumbing on a plane soon to somewhere in the world!!Enjoy travelling everyonexx

  • I do both. I have found some of the best sites just purely by accident. I have been to 14 out of the 16 places bing has shown, never been to Toronto, but it's on my list. Another must in Canada is Quebec and Montreal. And in Munich there is an artisan fair behind the Olympic Stadium that is great for finding local flair.

  • IT'S ME AGAIN. JUST GOT BACK FROM A TRIP TO MAJORCA. TOOK AN OVERNIGHT BOAT FROM BARCELONA TO THE ISLAND. WHAT A BLAST PARTIED ALL NIGHT WITH THE CREW. WOKE UP ON THE DECK THINKING I WAS ON MY WAY TO CASABLANCA. WHAT A SURPRISE WHEN I STEPPED OFF OF THE BOAT. I TRIED SPEAKNG FARSI BUT EVERYONE COULD TELL I WAS KIDMIT. I MET A GIRL FROM CHESTER WHO  TOLD ME I LOOKED EURASIAN. I LEFT IT AT THAT. BUMPED INTO SOME FRENCH GIRLS AND LOST MY MEMORY AFTER THAT.

  • BEEN IN NO. AFRICA NOW FOR 7 WEEKS AND HAVEN'T BATHED IN ALL THAT TIME - TRYING TO BLEND IN. FIRST THING I DID WAS BUY A KAFTAN & WRAP MY HEAD. SO FAR EVERYONE THINKS I'M ONE OF THEM. DON'T KNOW THE LANGUAGE SO I JUST POINT & MUMBLE. FUNDS ARE GETTING LOW SO I'VE TAKEN UP BEGGING WITH A TIN CUP & TAMBORINE.

  • Potwobol,

You might want to learn the fine art of personal hygiene. There is not one person that I know that would accept you into their home smelling like you do. GO CLEAN UP ghabi.

    Tu eres un gran ***!!!

  • About Potwobol - I met him at the Red Rooster in Dublin - What a character & a true representation of a Kidmit. Pray tell the woman who marries him.
