We learned this week that two people were arrested for stealing up to 1,000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim carousels at the Phoenix airport. While this is shocking news, it also isn’t that surprising, considering how relaxed security is in the arrivals area of the airport, compared to the departures level.
If you’re like most travelers, you take great care with any luggage that you plan to check, usually securing a tag with your contact information in the event your bag becomes lost. At the ticket counter, you may have to pay a fee to check your luggage, but you have the comfort of knowing that your bag’s been tagged carefully by the airline. And before it goes down a conveyor belt, you get a claim receipt so you can retrieve your bag later.
Even carry-on bags are closely watched when you’re departing. Announcements over the airport loudspeaker constantly remind you, “Do not leave your bags unattended.” And on your way to the gate, your luggage is carefully inspected and goes through an x-ray machine before you can even board the plane.
With all this care, security and tracking, why is it that when you arrive at your destination, you often see unclaimed bags circling the carousel in baggage claim? And when you go to retrieve your luggage, why is no one there to check your claim tag or identification? When you think about it, the suspected criminals in Arizona may have concocted the perfect crime. It’s a wonder that they ever got caught.
Have you ever had your luggage lost … or stolen? And were you reunited with your bag, or was it lost forever? Share your stories in the comments section.
The Arizona airport bag thieves were not the first to steal luggage off carousels. Others have done it, and have been eventually caught. Did you know they almost always steal BLACK luggage? Look at the photos in the news stories. Read why here: bobarno.com/.../airport-luggage-theft
Or just carry on!
I took a 9 day trip to Italy and Dubai 2 weeks ago, and brought only a carry on. Its not hard, you don't need that much if your going for vacation.
I have the option to check 2 free bags, but never do.
Fortunately I have always followed my own advise and have only lost items that can be easily be replaced. The number one golden rule is, always keep your non-replaceable items with you. I know it sounds like I told you so, but the frightening truth is that if you get careless and forget you'll end up just another victim in a news article just like this. I can't tell you how many times I stood there waiting at a luggage carousel for my luggage and saw some poor unfortunate persons face as their personal effects came around the corner spewed out all over the carousel and that other poor person that has been patiently waiting for their luggage that never arrives. Just be safe and keep it with you!

The most important rule is - don't leave your bags unattended. Also don't bring too much bags.
90% of lost bags - were stolen by a member of the general public/ security checkpont is the second most common place for theft and lose and security cameras reveal (upon review) another passenger took 'x'!
yet, nearly all the people with lost items file claims against the airline. hmmm.
Truth is; passengers need to be very careful at all times.
how about damage to you stuff?
Again its mostly passenger error , a bag with small rips, tears or stuck zipper can damage ITSELF IN FLIGHT!
What most filks dont know is, an in-air flight @ 35000 feet going 450 MPH is so much different of an experience for luggage than in the trunk of a car @ 65 mph.
In a car the luggage wont be bumped around, experience turbulenc. fall down from a 3 ft high stack onto a sheet metal floor et.
To prevent ur luggage from being damaged. Next time you pack...
Imagine if the bag were piled in the back of a pick-up truck' along with 65 other suitcases, boxes, unsecured boxes of liquids (b[coz someone doesn't know how to pack), exotic wines from a vacation, back packs, hiking boots, bowling balls, fishing gear, food lockers with dry ice and live fish, toys, baby strollers, wheelchairs and the TRUCK travels 99 MPH over a 100 mile non-stop drive...mostly on Asphalt but it hits a dirt/gravel road for a 40-60 mile stretch,
hmm? what will happen to that bag? THATS WHAT IT EXPERIECES ON A FLIGHT X 4 ! when 200-250 bags are piled atop each other and the Plane flies at 450 MPH a few hundred/thousand miles of so
Pack accordingly and save your things!
Stolen, crushed, or destroyed by luggage workers kicking your stuff around. I, indeed, wonder whether the security cams get these guys on tape. You need to file a theft report against the airline timely before the videos just roll over after some hours.
Anyway, the EU has some damage regulation for airlines, to hold them responsible for ANY damage resulting form luggage delay, check abc4trip.eu/dealing-with-lost-misplaced-air-luggage
