Unusual monuments around the world

People celebrate and memorialize some of the weirdest things. There are statues around the world dedicated to famous figures from history, religion and even fictional characters. Other monuments celebrate an event in history or an entire era. So as you can imagine, with all the strange people, events and eras the world has seen, some monuments are well, more unusual than others.

A new photo gallery from Bing Travel highlights a dozen of the most unusual monuments around the world. The ancient monument of Stonehenge is mysterious in its own right, but a replica of the site in Nebraska built out of old cars, called Carhenge, is downright odd. (At least the cars were painted grey to replicate the color of stone.) In Russia, a spa recently revealed a statue of a medical device — in bronze — that its patients are um, intimately familiar with. And a statue in Switzerland, meant to terrify young children, does equally well at terrifying adults.

  • There is a companion to the Manneken Pis in Brussels.  I don't know the name of it (the name being in French), but it's a little girl squatting and peeing.  She sits in a dead end alley that tourists don't usually visit.

  • How could you leave out the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory?

  • Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, TX

  • This unusual roadside attraction was built from over 500.000 discarded embalming fluid bottles. In 1952, David H. Brown retired from 35 years in the funeral business. It occurred to Mr. Brown that there should be some practical use to put the bottles to. And, it was all started, to quote Mr. Brown, "to indulge a whim of a peculiar nature".

  • Watts Towers in Los Angeles,CA

  • I don't remember what the park is called, but theres a small tourist attraction park, thing, in Vining, MN.  Some artist built a bunch of statues out of not so conventional things.  Theres a coffee cup standing on its own stream, an elephant made out of lawn mower blades, a knife cutting into a watermellon, a giant foot, and some other things.  It's pretty cool.

  • I do not have a pic, but in Enterprise, Alabama, there is a Boll Weevil Monument at the center of the town square. It is a fountain of a woman in a flowing dress, holding up a giant boll weevil (beetle) which is credited with causing the southern AL region to grow crops other than cotton after the beetles destroyed them, saving the region's economy (or something to that effect). Kinda cool.

  • How could you omit the Watts Towers of Simon Rodia?
