Do hotels match their own hype?

We all know that what you see isn’t necessarily what you get — and buyer beware. It’s certainly wise to remember those maxims when selecting a hotel.

In a new Bing Travel slide show, you’ll find 11 photos of hotels that aren’t quite as attractive as the pictures the hotels themselves promote. Expecting to find a serene pool, watched over by a bikini-clad woman? The crowded reality may dampen your spirits. So might the room that’s dressed up with frumpy accessories. And it’s worth pondering what a photo isn’t showing, too … like maybe a giant Macy’s looming practically overhead.

Of course, none of the issues addressed in our photo gallery means your hotel experience will necessarily be lousy. Overcrowded pools, dowdy suites and hulking department stores are a far cry from dirty rooms and rude or incompetent service. But it’s definitely worth taking any hotel’s photos with a grain of salt. And if a particular aspect of your accommodations is important to you, it may be worth investigating carefully before making a reservation.

Have you ever been wooed by a lush-looking picture on a hotel’s Web site or brochure, only to be disappointed when the reality didn’t match the hype (implied or otherwise)? Share your gripes and warnings with fellow travelers in the comments section.

 • I always feel very disappointed when a hotel doesn't match the pictures I saw on their sites. That's why it's a wise move to use a familiar agent to do hotel bookings.

 • Granted hotels, motels, and other sorts of lodgings are going to put their best foot forward sort of speaking by promoting their best attributes. Does this always mean that they're always going to be as good as shown in their brochures, of course not! Every business has a bad day and you might just be one of them days. Most of the hotels I've stayed at came highly recommended and lived up to their published presentations and there have been a select few I booked because of the price only that I would never book again or recommend. So I guess in conclusion I'd have to say that if a hotel comes highly recommended your pretty safe booking there. Happy Travels!

 • You can find many Cheap Hotel Prices using late rooms booking service!

 • Thank you for good information

 • Photos of a beautiful room don't indicate when a hotel room smells really unhealthy, housekeeping is minimal, pricing is predatory pickpocets have free access via the elevator to all floors and management doesn't care...this was in Amsterdam at "boutique" Hotel Vondel, not in an undeveloped country where there are clean, safe hotels available.

 • It is basic marketing and advertsing

 • I just had this same problem in Ft. Worth at a Hotel called Hotel Trinity. DO NOT STAY THERE!!! The pictures definately do not match the rooms. OMG the paint on the walls my 3 year old could have done. They said they had a kitchennette, no they had a refrigerator that did not work with a microwave on top of it that did not have a tray inside and the coffee maker was in the bathroom. The walls had holes in them and there was no hot water and the air conditioner did not work. OH YEAH THE WORST PART was that there were baby cockroaches crawling out of the blow dryer on the wall in the bathroom. It was the worst experience I have ever had. THE PICS WERE GREAT THE REAL LIFE NOT SO MUCH!!

 • Isn't this why people chose to stay with chain names they like Hilton, Residence Inn, Comfort Inn, etc?
