Wackiness on the waves

Wackiness on the waves

When I was little, my idea of cruises was shaped by the TV series “The Love Boat”: I saw cruise trips as happy but staid experiences, where you had quite a bit of sedate fun but did little out of the ordinary. To put it mildly, I was wrong.

The new Bing Travel slide show, Wackiness on the Waves, illustrates that point beyond a doubt. This gallery presents just a few of the activities that will help you get silly at sea — perhaps flinging yourself into the air on a bungee cord, sipping a martini in a bar that's also a certified elevator, riding a zip line from one end of the boat to the other, or getting slimed on a Nickelodeon-themed cruise. I’ve always found that it’s the out-of-the-ordinary moments that I remember best and enjoy most on my vacations — that’s why you call them extraordinary, after all — and these activities definitely qualify.

What are the wackiest things you’ve participated in on a cruise? What oddball activities would you like to see? Share your ideas with your fellow fun-loving travelers in the comments section.

  • Why pay? If you can gamble for free and win real money at:  http://www.7Picks.com

  • the trouble with cruises is that many still think of them as something that old people do. But looking at those pictures, I wouldn't mind being on one!

  • The new features and attractions on cruise ships are incredible, but over here at CruiseCritic.com your slideshow got us talking about the wackiest things we'd seen while on a cruise -- and it seems that anything goes at sea! From various sports involving rubber chickens or chipping golf balls into the pool, to dress-like-a-pirate night (particularly wacky when costumes are improvised from your luggage) and ice carving outside in 85 degree heat. And somehow, after a couple of cocktails in the sun – it really is great fun.

  • Am I the only person who hates cruise ships? I can think of nothing worse than being stuck in one place for days on end with my only escape being a tiny cabin. I like space and freedom.

That said, I'd love to go on one of those antartic voyages (can't really call them a cruise) that go on the smaller ships (100 odd people). I was very tempted when I was in Argentina a couple of years ago as the last minute fares are fairly cheap (still 4-5K though).

And of course, lots can go wrong so make sure you have trave insurance. More info here: www.travel-insurance-reviews.com

  • I would like to go on a cruise never been on one

  • Leaving port, we hit a large bouy that rocked the ship enough to knock folks out of their beds, knock over the icecream machines on deck, cause a shop to not open all week because of all the broken glass figures it had, and suprise even the crew.

  • I've never spent more than 6 in the 24 hours in a cabin.  Take an adventure cruise..take trips into the countries where you go....there is fun to be had 24/7.  Go to the lectures on the countries where you are going.  Cruise ships pay experts and scientists who will give you knowledge to enhance the experience.   I've snorkeled in 30 countries, and headed out for more.

  • Cruising is a great way to see places you may or may not want to travel to at a later date.  The price is right, some 7 day cruises are under $600.  You can eat as much as you want, and the food is pretty darn good, lots of entertainment.  When my wife and I cruise we usually have to slow ourselves down and pick times to relax, because there is so much to do.  In port we usually pick an excursion and have a lot of fun.  In the evenings there are the shows, casinos, bars, etc.  If you haven't cruised, give it a try!

  • I've been on 5 cruises - 5 different cruise lines in the past 30yrs.  NOTHING BETTER!

  • I've been on 4 cruises, all Royal Caribbean...They are GREAT!!!  Just got off one 2/21/10 - it was my Honeymoon.  My Husbands 1st cruise, he loved it.  It was more than he thought it would be.    If you go hungry its your own fault.  Lots to do, We were on the Freedom of the Seas.  Surfing, Mini Golf, Rock Climbing, Skating on Ice Show, Adult shows, Teens shows/Activities...They are GREAT!!  Give it a try if you have never been on one.

  • When I was young, circa 1950, my family went back and forth to Europe on the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. In those days, children were not especially welcome, indeed we were forced to eat in a "child's dining room". Of course, we did not know the wonders that would come so we made do with an indoor pool, movies, shuffle board and, when the weather was fair-not often in winter-walks on the deck. Was it fun? Yes because there was no comparison. The staff was friendly and, recognizing our plight, went out of their way to find amusements for us. I must have made that voyage more than thirty times, plus several round trips from Southampton to Cape Town, and I look back on them with great fondness. Since then I've taken several cruises and while they certainly had diversions, it struck me as pre-canned fun, the crew as artificially "happy" and, overall, contrived. Perhaps I miss the more formal days of Cunard and Atlantic crossings but cruises today do not equal them in style and comfort.

  • I've been on 3 Caribbean Legendary Blues Cruises and one Pacific Blues Cruise... more fun than I've ever experienced. 35 bands performing on five stage venues 18 hours a day with incredible jam sessions every night. Great

people from all over the country and the world dancing all day & night.  Blues Cruise.com !!!
