The number one directory is dmoz.org. But listing in dmoz is the toughest thing. It has some good rules to be followed. But you can also use the term list of directory websites in any search engine results.

Nothing is Dead in SEO field. All activities are impotent  for increase ranking Like Article,social bookmaking, Link Exchange,blog updation e.t.c

I fully agree with Rick. In my experience Article Marketing still works quite well, but link exchanges were dead as of 3-4 years ago when Google started cancelling out two sites that linked to each other. 

Produce content that is good link bait and spread it around. Make sure that your website is worthy of people coming to it.

Laura I agree with you, the tips given by you is good enough and also appreciated. For ranking in SERP we have to follow these points and also get traffic from high pr sites doing social networking or social bookmarking.

Put your backlinks in highly ranked websites.

There seems to be conflicting advice on the value of back links here - I honestly don't know the answer but will continue to seek relevant link exchanges with other sites (just in case). I think one of the areas that is not given sufficient understanding is the role of unique home grown content. I see more and more sites plagerising (sic) content and this may be picked up by the bots and the websites devalued.

yOU SHOULD BE FOCUSING ABOUT ONE WAY LINK.........I think so these links are more valuable to your site and also page rank.
