My site uses a 301 and my homepage is indexed, but is not searchable even using the exact url in search. The cached page just shows permanently moved. It seems very strange that Bing does not follow the 301 like the "other" search engines. Frustrating.

You will see a reply from Brett Yount. He said that: Bing first de-index the old pages/site and then index the one pages. May be Bing follow the 301 redirect a little slow. You can wait for sometime and hopefully, the problem will be solved.

Yes, this can be frustrating. Bing understands too slowly about these rules, but it will definitely obey the rule at the end.

I am going on 3 months, it will not follow the 301. Furthermore the page that uses the 301 is indexed, but will not show up even using exact URL in search. It does show using site: I know I am not the only one who uses a 301, rather common. I have to use the 301 or I would change it. My site for does very well and is indexed properly on the other two big SEO's, I hope Bing and crew are working on this issue. Seems basic, but I am sure it is not. My site also has a 5 Bing rating...If I use site: and then check the cached link, it pulls up site permanently moved. On Google/Yahoo it shows all content and operates correctly.
Just wish I knew if this is a known issue being worked on or if this is how it is.
There is a real problem with 301s and Bing. Why does that "moved permanently" page even exist? Its SERP death if the 301 is on the homepage - which is whats happening to you.
In addition, Im particularly having an issue with Bing re-crawling my homepage and many others in here are posting the same issue. One goes back to March and every thing on the page has changed since then. On checking the crawlers, they visit every day.
Something is just not right with this search engine.
Although I have had direct contact with MS over this issue and others, I too am unclear as to whether this is being worked on or not. Its so frustrating.

Thank you! Finally someone who seems to understand what my issue is. It makes no sense to me why Bing is programmed this way.....Can someone from Bing (Brett) let us know it this is a known issue that is being worked on?
I emailed brett with specifics on 21st October. Got a bit impatient and also filled in a request here today

I dont know whether it was Brett or the above URL, but my site is now corrected on Bing. Its targeting the UK (although webmaster tools stil says that it isnt), and we are appearing on page 1 for at least 10 of our core search terms. The 301's have now been followed and the redundant pages removed.
Obviously Im pleased, but does this mean that the only way this is corrected is if you contact Bing? So if I make any other changes, I'll have to go through all of this again? Time will tell
Anyway - Bretts email is byount@lgconsult.com. Im only posting as I know he puts it freely in forums himself. Try emailing him and the link above. Put your site name in the Subject box and the issue in the text.
It seems the URL above actually does get you some action. Lots of replies today from real people.
Hopefully Bing will follow my 301's soon?
Besides this issue, general search results from Bing are excellent, quite often better than Google.

Based on what exactly? There are people posting in here that Bing doesnt even show the exact url when searched. How do you know you are receiving the best results?
I've been very impressed with general search results on Bing, that opinion has nothing to do whether I get best results for my website, which incidentally since I posted my last comment a few hours ago, went from displaying every page, new and old orphaned 301 pages, to only displaying my home page !!!!! Arrggh but I guess it will sort itself out in a short while.
Sorry i wasnt clear.
I was asking how you have come to the conclusion that Bing search results are better than Google, when there are numerous posts in here saying that sites are not being indexed properly?
Although Bing has a nice front end/user interface, there are a lot of issues with this engines behaviour. The crawlers dont work properly, its takes a long time for sites to be indexed properly, 301s not being followed correctly, sites targeting the wrong region. Until these things are corrected, then people will NOT be getting proper search results no matter how pretty Bing has made them look.
Im just not sure how you can say the search results are good - you dont know what you dont know and therefore you dont know whats missing from the results. ???
Mine just got corrected, I now have my www. Thankyou all.

Ive just seen a post by Brett Yount saying that Bing has now corrected how it follows 301's..... so is it now corrected?
Guys just read a forum post where brett has mentioned that 301 has been fixed in Bing.. so now that should work correctly..
