Indexing Pages with Tracking Parameters

Not Answered This question is not answered

Bing is indexing a link that contains tracking parameters from Google Adwords.  The only way I can think of why Bing found this link was from crawling a sponsored ad in Google.  Is there anyway to understand why and how to get this type of link updated in Bing?

The search query:  http://www.bing.com/search?q=kohler+faucets&go=&form=QBLH&qs=HS&sk=&pq=kohler+faucets&sp=1&sc=8-14

The SERP is on page 1:  www.faucetdirect.com/kohler/c332?source=ggkohlerfaucetopt&s_ kwcid=kohler%20faucets

The tracking code paramaters that should not be on this indexed link are:  ?source=ggkohlerfaucetopt&s_ kwcid=kohler%20faucets

This link should look like this:  www.faucetdirect.com/kohler/c332

  • You can use robots.txt file to stop Bing Bot from crawling the URLs with the said parameter.

If you want a URL from your site to be removed from Bing SERPs, then read this:

The URL that is listed in Bing search results for this search query is not included anywhere on the primary site.  I should not have to use a robots.txt rule to exclude a page that does not actually exist on my site.  All the parameters are for tracking purposes, the only way  Bing would have crawled this link is if a 3rd party site has this URL pointing back to my main site.

Another thing that is already in place is the canonical tag referencing link:  http://www.faucetdirect.com/kohler/c332

I was under the impression that Bing followed the rel="canonical" tag.  Is this not the case?

    Bing does support this element:

  • Nice.  It just got updated I'm assuming.  I emailed support through the form you sent me about 20 mins ago.  Very impressed with Bing at the speed which they fixed this.  Thanks for your help

Just so you are clear on the "existence" of pages - if it resolves from your server, it exists.  You may not want it to exist and it may not be part of your architecture, but if your server returns the page that was requested, then that page exists.

As stated earlier, Bing doesn't support the Canonical tag.  Also, Bing prefers to find pages via inbound links so the links that carry those tracking variables in the URL, the "third party links" are ones that get picked up by Bing.

You might consider doing a check (I'm not familiar with Cold Fusion enough to say exactly how to code it) before you render your pages.  If the page carries tracking values in the URL, put a meta tag on the page that says "no index, follow" or "no index, no follow" to keep it from being indexed as duplicate content.
