Blogging and SEO

Answered (Verified) This question is answered

I have seen different recommendations for this...Is it better from and SEO perspective to create your blog on the domain of the site you are trying to promote (with the aim of lots of regularly updated content, and possibility of other people linking to you)

Or is better to create a blog on a totally different domain (maybe even free wordpress or blogger blogs) write relevent posts and include optmiised links back to the domain I want to promote?

Your recommendations please...

  • The separation is not as important as some seem to imply. Essentially a separate domain or subdomain gives your blog slightly more "power" as a standalone site. It's a lot easier to get external links to blog.example.com than to www.example.com/blog/, for instance. You also have a greater chance of multiple listings within a single set of search results.

But it really comes down to how many links your blog obtains, and how it passes that benefit back to your other site. A new URL is a new URL, whether or not it lives on its own domain or subdomain. It has nothing until it starts acquiring links.

Personally I tend to use a subdomain - this gives greater flexibility from a technical standpoint and keeps things tied to one domain name.
