Matte is back! But how can you tap into the trend without looking like an 80s throwback? We’ve got the best new products and tips for perfect matte skin.

1. Prime your face

Primer is an essential for this look, as it helps makeup go on smoothly and last all day without creasing.

Buy it:Revlon’s new Photoready Prime & Anti-Shine, £9.99, Boots gives a pro finish and blurs out big pores.

2. Ace the base

Matte foundations aren’t flat or ageing like they used to be. This year’s formulas just give your skin a lovely even finish without settling into lines or leaving a dry, tight feeling.

Splurge:Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin foundation, £29

Bargain: NYC BB Creme Instant Matte 5 in 1, now £2.49, Superdrug

3. Blur out shine and lines

The latest matte bases have nice light-reflecting qualities, so they don’t blot shine out completely. You’ll need powder to finish the look but keep it light and only powder your T zone and chin (not all over).

Buy it: Bourjois Silk Edition powder, £8.99, Boots has the added bonus of a line-softening effect.

4. Highlight your skin

The new matte look is all about mixing up your textures. Start with a velvety base then add hints of shimmer and lustre to update the matte look for 2015. The key areas to apply are inner corners of the eyes, top of cheekbones and Cupids bow.

Buy it:M&S Autograph Pure Luxe Multi-Highlighter, £12.50, is super-pretty

5. Go bold on lips

A velvety base plus a strong matte lip is totally on trend for 2015. Keep eyes neutral to balance the look.

Buy it: Makeup Revolution’s Ultra Velour Lips have the most incredible pigments (very NARS-like) and cost just £3 each.
