Chamber honors United Federal

NILES -- The Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce has named United Federal Credit Union its business of the year. The announcement was made last week at the Chamber’s annual meeting in Niles.

United Federal broke ground last year on a new corporate office building at 2102 S. 11th St. in Niles Township. The 20,000-square-foot building was completed in February.

The former Clark Equipment Co. and Whirlpool Corp. employees’ credit unions merged in 2006 under the United Federal name. Since then, the credit union’s membership has increased by 81 percent to more than 130,000 members and its assets have more than doubled to $1.83 billion. It is the 100th-largest federally insured credit union in the United States, according to the National Credit Union Association.

United Federal’s corporate offices and main branch are in St. Joseph. The credit union has branches in Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio in addition to those in Michigan.
