A Royal Marine commando has been questioned by police over suspicions that he tried to join fighters battling against Islamic State militants while on leave from the Navy.

The 22-year-old, who was serving with 45 Commando in Scotland, was barred from boarding a flight from California to Turkey.

The unnamed Marine, who is not thought to be Muslim, was reportedly stopped as he tried to depart on his leave time after joint exercises with American troops two weeks ago.

Security sources in the US told the paper that “alarm bells” had rung over his one-way ticket to Turkey, which is often used as a staging post for those trying to make their way to join fighters in the Middle East.
