Anchorman writer/director Adam McKay has confirmed he is in early talks to direct an unnamed Marvel project.

McKay was hired by Marvel earlier this year to rewrite the script of next summer's Ant-Man, after original writer and director Edgar Wright dramatically departed the project weeks before it was scheduled to start filming.

He rewrote the script with help from the film's star Paul Rudd, and the film is currently shooting with Peyton Reed now in the director's chair.

Speaking to Crave Online, McKay revealed that his experience working with Marvel has been so good that talks are underway for their working relationship to continue beyond Ant-Man.

"I just did a big rewrite on Ant-Man with Paul Rudd and had such a great time working with them that we're kicking around ideas," he said. "Maybe I would take on one of the characters so we haven't locked in anything, but discussions are definitely going on."

Earlier in the interview he talks about getting "into the early stages with Marvel," which also indicates that Ant-Man is just the beginning for Marvel and McKay.

Quite what film he might direct is really anyone's guess. McKay's career is rooted in comedy, so it is unlikely he would direct rumoured Marvel projects like Black Panther. He could however be in talks to direct an Ant-Man sequel, should Marvel be feeling confident about the film's prospects.

Ant-Man stars Rudd alongside Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena and John Slattery. It is pencilled in for release on 17 July, 2015.
